View Full Version : Bristle worm "event"
Freak On A Reef

Hi All,
I am still fairly new to the salt water world and witnessed a bizarre thing last night. My wife and I were sitting on the couch watching TV and all of a sudden white clouds started bursting out of my live rock in about 6-8 areas. The larger bristle worms we launching sperm clouds and by the time it was over the tank looked like it was filled with skim milk. The LPS all immediately opened up and appeared to enjoy the new proteins but everyone else was pretty freaked out. Has anyone else seen this? Reckon I need to erradicate some of the worms with a freshwater dip for the rock? I have quite a few worms but I certianly don't want a population explosion.

Wow... you really are a freak! How on earth did you know / figure out those were sperm clouds from bristle worms?
And, is it even okay to discuss this in a public forum like this? (all in good fun...)

HAHAHA!
Not sure on what the clouds were but my science teacher would have probably agreed with ya ;). You could see a bubble kinda roll up the worms body and their rear would come out of the hole in the rock. Very strange indeed. Just guessing at what it was but one would think...

Your tank should be fine, most bristle worms are harmless.

seen it happen to. worms would just pop out and spray the stuff then go back and pop out again. theres no reason to kill them or worry about it. this happened in a 28g. since that time i had a lot of worms in the tank. was pretty cool.

Now I understand the parentheses on the thread title.
You should have put on some Barry White while it was going on, or at least a little 70's whacka/whacka music to help the mood!

How do they get into your tank to start with? Do they harm anything in the tank? What do they eat?

they can harm corals...and they can get huge....they usualy get into your tank when you purchase live rock. the best thing to do is to get rid of it....i mean yea there are some bristleworms that are harmless but why risk killing your fish and coral....
