Ok maybe its me being lazy, lol. I dont want to build a stand for a 40g breeder I just bought so I set it up on a dresser. With water and rock I estimate the weight to be right at approx 400lbs. Now with that said the dresser is built pretty well at least in comparison to the cheap petco/petsmart partical board stands. My only concern is the dresser being top heavy because it is tall. Its actually a chest of drawers. Im probably going to break down and have a stand built or build myself.

Yeah, that would make it very top heavy. How tall is the dresser? Mine is pretty tall so I would be leary of that. I have a 32in. tv on top of mine and it makes me nervous! LOL

ITs tall, basically im 5/11.5 tall and I can stand and look into the tank. When in doubt..... Im going to build one. I think I have enough scrap would to do so.

You and your wife should try to sit on it and see if it holds your weight(bought 300 combined I am guessing). I think you would be prety safe if this is the case.

I weigh 165 so my with my wife we are approc 305 or so. It will hold the weight of us no problem.

My concern is it being top heavy, because the chest of drawers is so tall.

It also depends on the base of the dresser. If is is solid all the way around or if it has 4 feet/corners. If it's solid, then it can distribute the weight better. If it's just 4 feet/corners, then they may not be designed to support that much weight.

If the only concern is top heaviness you can always bracket the dresser to a stud in the wall to sturdy it up.

the weight will eventually take its toll you'll notice the top drawers won't open as easy as before. i would just build one and make the way i want or high enough

I had a 29g on a standard dresser for years. It was a fresh water tank but I had enough gravel in there to weigh as much as sand/live rock combined. I had not problems with it at all. The tank was 1" narrower than the dresser.

I took it off the pending tower of doom aka chest of drawers and moved it to a actuall dresser. I added support to the middle so we are good. A plus is that it is directly in from on the bed and at eye level.

Lonestar you will notice you post said edited by me; It was a accident. I meant to hit the quote button but hit edit instead:angel:

Cool, looks like it will be easier to access on that lower dresser. I used to have a 29g on a mircrowave stand and it worked pretty good too.

I think you'll be in good shape Ray.

As a note, I had the 29g on the tall dresser similar to the one you posted above.
