I understand that plugs are pretty convenient regarding propogation...but I simply don't care for the way they look in my tank. They seem un-natural and out of place. Am I the only one who feels this way? Maybe its just something I have to get used to now that I am collecting SPS.

I was wondering how horrible it would be (for the frag) to remove it from the plug and re-mount it to some rubble. Any opinions?

Thanks, Jamie

I remove them before they have the opportunity to encrust. I use a flathead to wriggle it free from the plug, and then use Loc-Tite to hold them to the rock.

perfectly fine to remove them. Erik method iof doing so is easy. Not getting Super Glue on every finger is tuff. At least for me.

ALL of my frags are on plugs, but you can no longer see them because they are covered by the coral. It also gives the coral a nice base to grow on. you can certainly break it off if you want but I like the nice big base they provide

I've remounted all but one.

Super glue is out to get me. I've never been able to use it without getting on my fingers or nails. Good thing is I figured out how to get it off fairly quickly using a pedicure foot thingy....the giant emery board that removes rough skin thing.

Why not just nail polish remover/acetone? No skin removal that way.

As far as the plugs, make your own. That way you can control the shape a little better, and make a mix that is consistent with the color and texture of your existing LR. I prefer making smaller disks, about the size of a 2-liter bottle cap, but with a really small peg.

I have snapped off many of the pegs on mine so mounting them to the rock would be less noticable - once they are in the new tank.

Now this may not be a option for many but I did see a thread on RC where they pre-drilled their live rock for frag plugs. This was done before the live rock was added to the tank. That way he was able to insert the frag plugs into the live rock once transfering systems.....or when he adds new ones.

These are pretty neat too:

Jamie,
not a problem to take them off the plugs, I would just recommend that you glue them to some live rock rubble so that you can still move the coral around due to overgrowing, adjusting the depth due to lighting needs, or flow needs.

You may want to give them a another day or so to get accustomed to your water before you break them off the plug.
