sand

so ive decided to buy regular sand instead of livesand, and clean it good.
then im going to remove half of my origanal live sand and put in the new sand.. i was told to do this and to let my old rocks colonize my new ones... so how long should i let the half of old sand "colonize" my new ones before i remove the last of the old sand and put in the rest of the new sand?
