Im bored here at work, and figured why not start a poll to see how often people really do there water changes. Im curious to see who actually changes their water religously once per month or the who doesnt do them at all.
I will be honest and say besides the initial start up of the tank where I might do a water change every to weeks; once the tank is established I do water changes quarterly aka every 2 1/2-3 months- So 4-5 times a year.

Wow, I do them weekly. 15 gallons....
Once a month I do a large water change of about 30-40 gallons.

I just worry about the exportation of phosphates mainly. Plus, I tried to let my tank go for longer and everything just started looking drab. You can slack on WCs once you find that sweet spot, but that takes time! :)

Yea, my new tank will have SPS so I will be doing once a month to keep things in check. Have to get into the habit. Positve thing is the 210g is gone and doing a water change on a 39g is much quicker.

i actually do them every 10 days, but that wasn't an option. not sure why, but the tank seems to look much better if I keep this up.

When I first started I used to do water changes every few weeks. Now I let it go a few months at a time. I need to get back into the habit of doing them more often.

I have been doing weekly 20 gallon changes, thinking of going to bi-weekly 25 - 30 gallon changes.

my tank is healthiest when i do a 5 gallon water change twice a week. that amounts to 40 gallons or about 10% a month. it just seems to be more effective when done that way.

I do a 5 gal change every week to week and a half ish for the 29.
I'd like to do a 10 gallon change on that same time table, but am not willing to haul 15 gallons (10 salt, 5 fresh) up 3 flights of stairs every sunday.

Is there a reason for you pretending to be ignorant? If it's an attempt at sarcasm, it's a little overboard for the purpose of the thread.

OK, sorry for being stern. There used to be a few people around that liked to disrupt threads on purpose with overly "strange" comments like that.

should have added a poll for every 2 weeks or less, lol. But it looks as if the majority of us do water changes on somewhat of a regular schedule which is a good thing.

yeah, I try to do a 15 gallon water change every 2-3 weeks. A larger one if it goes longer without one

I change 10% a week. Less shock to the corals than a large change once a month.

I do 10% per week on the big tank, because I have someone do it for me. I do 20% every 2 weeks on the smaller one, cause I do that one myself. I think 10-15 % per week is optimal.

On my 120 gallon, using Instant Ocean, I was doing 20-25 gallons (24-30%) water changes once a month for about 8 months. Then, 10 gallons (12%) every two weeks in the last 2 months. Now, using SeaChem Reef and doing 10 gallons (12%) every week for about two months to cycle out the Instant Ocean, before reducing it down to 5 gallons (6%) every week to test SeaChem without a CA Reactor. I get the feeling that I should stay at 10 gallons (12%) every week or every two weeks. Time and coral will tell!

The poll came out to be interesting and fun.
Obviously a higher pecentage changes their water once a month or more, but it is actaully pretty scattered among the others and their are 1000's of members and only us that are on here all the time posted. Like stated before I will part of the once a month club soon if not every 3 weeks once I have my tank up and running with the SPS.

I have a small yearly calendar inside the stand doors and I check it periodically to see when the next h2o is due, I usually empty out all the sump(@5-7 g) first around the next week or so of the month and close to the last week of the month I do the 25-30 % h2o change. The way I usaully (key word usually) keep track on a regualr basis is by doing the changes everytime I get paid which is every two weeks.

I have customers that do them twice a week and some that do them twice a year. Both have great tanks. I think that your tank will adjust to the water changing as long as you keep the same schedule. I also think that what you keep will affect when you should do changes. Some inhabitants may like cleaner water some dirty.(softies vs sps) We average 10 % a week taken out everytime we sell a bag.
