Hey guys over the last few day my house has a odor of feet:sick: It started when I added my new larger sump. The water parems are good Amm-O, Nitites-O, Nitrates are a little higher because it is a FOWLR. After sniffing around I figured out the source of the smell is not the water or the sump. ITs the protein skimmer. I have a Octopus skimmer and their lids have 4 vent holes that release the gasses that im smelling though out my entire house. I love this skimmer because it does a heck of a job but can I cover up these holes?
Thanks
Ray

than is the way the air leaves the skimmer, so if you cover the holes, the skimmer wont work well if at all.
after you clean it if you will put some kalkwasser powder (pickling lime) in the collection cup and leave it there it will supposedly kill the smell.
or you could have the collection cup tapped for a drain and drain it off to another larger container that always has KW in it - then you could cover the vent holes on the lid.

Baking soda should work wonders.

Cool im going to give it a shot im also going to put one of the baking soda boxes on top of the sump to absorb any odors that escape. Hopefully that solves the problem.

Someone once told me that the smell is from bacteria growing in the collection cup. They suggested I add a pinch of kalk. The idea is that the ph would be too high for the bacteria to live. It worked great for me. Just put about a teaspoon in the cup the next time you clean it.

I've seen a mod done to a Euroreef skimmer once to help this. They got a piece of acrylic tube the same diameter as the cup but about 2-4" deep. They glued it to the lid of the skimmer so that they could pour carbon into it. This filtered out the smell as it left the skimmer.

I personally recommend that you not soak your feet in the sump anymore....LOL!

A bit of Kalk IS the ticket. I only add some to my collection container about every month or 2 - and it keeps it odor free and un-nasty (it sits on the bottom of the container).
