Welcome to MAAST! Any easy way to build baffles is by using pressure locking sump baffles (http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_3/cav3i1/Baffles/baffles.htm). :)

Yes Welcome, check out the site mentioned above and it will give you lots of good info. With a 55g the sump will have to be long and narrow so do some homework on how you would like the layout but what will also work the best for the tank and its inhabitants.
