i remember reading a long time ago( back in the good ole days, maybe from Tim Marvin possibly????) that someone posted this idea, and now i have lots of extra sand and am gonna use it for a good use....
they took a garbage can full of sand, and then put two bulkheads on it. the tank would siphon water into one, and let it flow slowly over the sand, and then out the other bulkhead into the sump. the idea was that the SUPER deep sand bed would pull down all the harmful things and keep them in the sand bed, like a huge sand trap for nitrates and stuff like that, then after a year or so just threw the bad sand away and get new sand... does anyone else remember this idea, or have more information on it?? thanks guys

i think patrick (ou812pezz) did a small version of this a while back - he just used a 5 gallon bucket.

well i filled up a 32 gallon trash can, and connected it all, so we'll see how it works!

Interesting, how many lbs of sand did you use? About how deep is this 32 gallon filled up with sand?

I would assume 200lbs or so. Interesting idea

Sounds more like a sand filter like what is used on swimming pools only without the pressure of forcing the water through an enclosed container. I remember when we did that "behind the scenes" tour at Sea World they have some huge sand filters they use to clean the water for the exhibits.

in the 32 gallon trashcan is about 5 inches from the top, its a LOT of sand, and very heavy... and hard to drag a few feet.. ha
