recently i went from a 20 gallon tank to a 65 gallon and noticed that some of zoos seem to be extending themselves upward. i have power compact lighting on the tank and i sm wondering what the zoos are supposed to look like when healthy versus almost dead.

Do the polyps look inverted, almost like an umbrella? If so they are irritated, give them some time to settle. Look for good polyp extension, and make sure that none of them are closed. Closed is a bad sign if the lights have been on and they have not come out. Although, some zoas may take a few days. You may want to look into a VHO light setup.

I have had some that tend to extend more in an upward position than laying in a mat/blanket style. How much light do you have on the tank, they may also be trying to extend up more to get more light. I know some of my mushrooms lay more flat when the halides are on than when they go off and just actinics are on.

I know when I move zoos around from tank to tank they get upset. This happens even if the lighting is about the same. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless they are closed. I have some zoos that prefer to stand up and some that go more in a mat.

they are all open some, seem to be very close to the rock and others are extending upward as if trying to smile. i have a 36 inch coralife dual 65 w setup.

Fat and happy, symmetrical in most cases, responsive to touch. Got any pics?
