sea urchin

What does it mean when a sea urchin's spines turn white. Does this mean that he is shedding them or is dying

What color were they to start with?
My Pin Cushion/Blue Global's were red/pink/white and stayed the same color when he died. Mine stopped moving around and I found him up side down yesterday. He just looked kind of dull w/a mustard hue. His blue coloring looked faded and narrower than usual. I'm not sure why, but I had him for over two years, so it might of just been his time.

Jonathan mine is doing the same thing. He started out black and did not move for 3 months. Now he is white and he is moving around the tank. I will tag along if you don't mind.
