Calcium and Alkalinity Supplement

I wanted to try this. But would any one know where I can get the calcium chloride. Tried HD. but I dont even know where to look or what it would be use for. I know up north they use it for ice.So if any one would help me thanks

I've been using Dupont calcium hardness increaser from Lowes. You can find it in the pool section.

One bit of warning about the Dupont stuff...it looks just like kent turbo calcium and may be exactly the same stuff, but I kind of doubt it. There are different grades of calcium chloride, and I for one don't know how they determine the purity for the different grades. So, Randy Holmes-Farley tested some dowflake, which is also sold as Prestone diveway heat, for purity and found it to be sufficiently free of impurities for aquarium use. But, to my knowledge noone's done that with the dupont stuff, so you might eventually have some problems with it. Unfortunately you probably would not notice the problems for a while; it might be a slow build up of toxicity, there's no way to know. The point is, if you put it in your tank and nothing dies, that's not proof that it's not toxic.

It might be fine. Since dowflake is available at not much higher cost, even figuring in shipping, IMO it's worth finding that. I've heard most autozones carry Prestone dirveway heat.

Looking at your sig, you seem to have small enough tanks so that even buying turbo calcium wouldn't be a huge expense. I went through this whole thing with magflake and ended up buying it from buckeye. Shipping was high, but if you buy alot you'll only have to do it once. It's still way cheaper than b-ionic or other aquarium products.

If you're talking about price, it's a dramatic difference. I make 5 gallons of calcium supplement and alkalinity supplement (10 gal total) for less than $5.
