A. Loripes ?
or how about "Fancy Acropora" :lol
JimD
Tue, 17th Apr 2007, 06:31 PM
lol, Wrong on both accounts! Can you say, NEXT!? A Hyacinthus has much thicker individual branches, look a little closer at the structure on this one, plus, its not nearly as common as Hyacinthus.

my next guess would have been Solitaryensis
JimD

possibly A Latistella
Ladies and gentleman, we have a winner! Very good! what was it that prompted you to determan Latistella besides a good guess? lol

Very minor differences between Plana, Desalwii and Latistella, mainly branch thickness and length. One can look exactly like the other and still be a different species. That would have been a very good guess Ace.

There are five or six easily identifiable very common types of Table coral. A Hyacinthus, A Eflourescens, A Plana, A. Latistella, A Cytherea.. it looked the most like A Latistella.. also a good guess :)
Edit,,: i should not say very common.. but more commonly identifiable

Obliviously none of you went to the Palleta talk in Houston on species ID. Pretty much unless you bleach a frag out and disect it under the microscope there is no way to be positive of the ID. We had a sun polyp skeleton that looked exactly like a acro one. Not to challenge any of you to the ID because I have no idea just saying it's not as easy as you think.
So I win!! It's something I don't have.

As soon as the guy named Ace finishes the canopies, sumps, reactors, Etc. for the entire MAAST site ;) he might have time to come over and takes some pics.. it is still quite small but has some nice color and is starting to grow well

Not necessarily true, some species have already been positively ID'd so its not that difficult to ID something thats already been positively ID'd. Its more the unidentified 'new' species that he was most likely refering to. Once you gain experience its becomes pretty much repetition. I mean if you saw an A. tenuis would you need to dissect it to ID it?
