I'm thinking it has something to do with the aquarium being upside down 'U' shaped. Possibly creating equalizing pressure on both sides that way???

Wow...thats awesome!

The only thing that I can think of is that it is a sealed tank without air???

Kind of like what happens if you dip a straw in a liquid then hold your fingertip on the top, no liquid falls out of the botttom??? This is only a guess though. And I wouldn't think that there would be any O2 exchange due to this set up, so I really don't know.
