OK,

My wife is in love w/ procupine puffers. She wants to put a tank in her office and keep a puffer there. since I won't be around much to maintain it, I want it to be as maintenance free as possible for her and the office staff willing to help.

So here is the plan.

90 gallon tank on a Sedona Stand & Canopy

2 holes drilled in the bottom on either side to act as drains. (this will not be a reef ready tank)

4 holes drilled on the back 2 x drain - 2 x return)

the two bottom holes will feed into a HIATT torpedo system, since this is a fish only tank, I am not worried about the negative effects we have seen on reefs like Bill (Bstreeps). the Hiatts will be plumbed from the get go so that w/ the twist of a couple valves and the hookup of a hose they can be backflushed into the office complex's lawn.

Also included in the plumbing will be 2 Phosban Reactors and a UV filter, both will be plumbed aside for reduced current.

Hiatts, from what I have learned, obliterate waste exceptionally well, but leave phosphate in the water... if I am mistaken no this, then the phosban reactors won't be needed.

sand bed will be purely decorative - 2 inches deep at most, and seeded w/ live sand from other tank

I have two show sized pieces of liverock that are about 50 lbs apiece and allready cured being babysat in a friends tank, they will complete the display.

oh, lights will just be an inexpensive set of T-5's since setup cost in a factor.

initially it will just be the puffer, but I imagine she will add some agile fish later that can stay away from him, and will probably have some starfish, hermits, and snails, all fo the cleanup crew that goes in of course will be introduced w/ full knowledge they might be an expensive snack.

am I missing anything?

Are you doing a closed loop or something with the 4 holes in the back. Seems like that may be a little overkill also for a non-reef tank, not to mention cost of pump and running it and maintaining it.

Also consider the demensions of the tank for this fish. I've never kept one so I don't know if longer or taller would be better choice or little of both. Keep up the good work of planning out in advance.

yes, a striped burrfish. Most appealing puffer IMO, I love mine to death. He is going into my reef tank as well, and I'll bet money that he doesn't eat a thing (coral wise of course)! :)

If the office is away from the home I would be nervous with so many holes in the tank. What if a leak happens on the weekend? Have you considered using hang-on filtration or a canister filter, seeing as you are just keeping it fish only.

well the hiatt is a glorified canister filter...

I really don't see a reason to worry about holes drilled in the aquarium, I mean if it is leak tested before adding livestock, then it has no greater chance of leaking at her office than it does at our home, and if it does leak, most likely it is going to be a drip or weeping style of leak and not a catastrophic failure.

but I will definately think about it. not drilling it reduces the cost and she will like that.

you still run the slim chance of an overflow losing it's siphon. I know it sounds crazy, but my overflow quickly caught some water too fast, which caused it to "burp". That burp made the siphon break, which if I hadn't been there, would have overflowed my tank. I think for aesthetics, she will enjoy the overflows rather than HOB. That's why I am doing away with my HOB overflow box asap.

no overflows, the returns can come back over the top of the tank, everything else will be drilled... for now.

The Hiatt consumes phosphates as well - too well, in my case. I had to ADD phosphates to reduce nitrates.

Don, keep spamming, it's the kind i like! :)

I have to say, I love both the burrfish and the puffer, but the ultimate decision comes down to my wife since it's her tank.
