View Full Version : I need 1/2 inch glass quick

My 240 is cracking. The crack advanced 1/16 inch in the last 12 hours.
I hope to glue a piece of glass on both sides of the cracking sheet with silicon to see if I can stop it from growing. It may not work but I think it's worth a try. If it keeps advancing it will run into a bulkhead hole where it will likely stop.
I need two pieces 1/2 inch thick:
2.25 by 5 inches
3 by 5.5 inches
Does anybody know of a local company who can supply this quickly?

Thad Zieglar called and they can't cut this until tomorrow. I still need a supplier today. Morris' phone/FAX doesn't work.

Wow. Sorry to hear about this. If I were in your shoes, I'd empty it. There are plenty of folks around with room, you can also try Louis at AW, he has a big tub you might borrow. You won't get a good repair UNLESS the glass is perfectly flat - and it won't be if it is full. Is the crack near the top?

Im with Bill. Empty it unless the tanks in the garage with no fish in it but it sounds like it is. Where is the crack?

Try Samuels Glass. They might be able to cut a piece today.
But I agree...I would try to drain that tank to repair it if you could ;)

Hey jack is this the new tank?

Yeah it's the new tank. The crack is near the top starting from near the corner going down diagonally on the side panel about three inches.
I got a couple of pieces of 3/8 glass from Samuels. The guy there was real nice. I drained the tank part way and glued them with silicon. I'll wait two days until filling it back up again. Meanwhile, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and running power heads.
In the last 4 hours the crack hasn't moved. It took 12 hours for it to move the last 1/8 inch before that. It was barely leaking. There was just salt creep around it.
I swear the stand is as flat and level as you can tell without using an indicator or coordinate measuring machine. I think it's within .005 inches overall using a good straight edge and feeler guages. Of course that was with no load. And the tank is on 3/4 inch styrofoam per mfg. spec..

Glass Cages... Second one.
I got my tank used, and it's an Oceanic Brick. with an OCEANiC stand. I don't think I'd do anything differently, when it comes to the tank/stand. Just ain't worth it when you are talking about 215 gallons.

Yeah, thats pretty hard to swallow...two tanks in less than a few months. Any idea as to the cause, and any possible warranty claims?

I'm just getting up to speed now that I read it was the second one. Is this from the thread where the tank that was delivered and leaked? And this was the "rushed" replacement? As much as it sucks spending more out of pocket money, I'd suggets one of those large 300g water/food troughs made out of that black nylon. RatBoy in ATX had a similar story about his bulkhead area cracking. He put a huge tub in the garage and from what I can tell, seems unmotivated to move it back in the house. Honestly it's a really neat set up and could get you by until the next replacement. And at that I'm sure someone would buy it when finished.

Yeah it's this one
http://www.maast.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=20570&pos tdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=another+built&star t=30
The first was bowed on the bottom badly and leaked. Glasscages absorbed the shipping and gave me another one.
I'm thinking about building the next one myself.

Man i had a 55 gal RR from glasscages. When i put the stand pipes in i think i twisted it too hard or something cause it cracked the bottom pane from front to back through the bulkhead hole. I had just bought that tank used with nothing wrong with it. In fact it had water in it the day before i picked it up!! Now its my QT in the garage

Here's an update.
It's empty... Oh, so empty. :(
In my breakfast room there's a 40 breeder and the sump from my 120 system with most of my corals and all of the fish. The lights are behind the curtain.
The sump that Ace made me is still running with a bunch of rock, alga, and some soft corals.
I have a trach can with a bunch of rock in it. And 10 containers of sand by my fireplace.
I'm maintaining temperature and water motion in three of the systems and using manual topoffs.
I'm ready to move the tank to a temporary location and repair it better. Here's more about that:

Here's pics. I'm glad my wife is supporting.

Dam, sorry to hear of your troubles, I just can't believe how much bad luck you are going through , I mean there have been several large glasscages tanks here on maast alone , including mine, without any of these kinds of issues. Maybe Tom is getting too much business...hmmm , have you tried calling him??
Man this has got to be testing your will to stay in this hobby...if there is anything I can do, just let me know.

Thanks,
I enjoy a challenge. This is probably the toughest hobby I've had. And it's kept me interested the longest. Too bad I can't make alot of money at it.

Here's an update for anybody interested.
I built a temporary stand in my garage where I could repair and water test the tank. I'm too nervous to water test a repair in the house with 240 gallons of water.
I cut the cracked glass panel out with razor blades. I had a new piece cut by Thad Zeigler. It had to be sanded a but to fit. I glued it in with RTV 108 from Grainger and waited 2 weeks.
Yesterday I filled it with water and so far so good. I hope to put it back on it's base tomorrow.

Wow.
So needless to say no more drilled holes on that side of the tank? ;)
Hopefully 3rd times a charm!

Yeah, no more holes over there. I think I can make the closed loop work over the rim of the tank. I just need to prime the pump and fill the pipe with water.
I reworked the surface of the base too to improve it's flatness.
By the way, I'm selling a bunch of stuff in the For Sale forum.
