Daughter was out sick from school today and that means I actually had time to visit some cool shops and spend some money. Here's what I got from CB's and Louis at Aquatic warehouse.

Oops, guess I forgot to take off the label. The one Bill got is what seaworld calls a miami orchid but most people have thought is a cali tort so that's what I called it. Looks a little different than an ORA tort to me but I'm not so hot at acro species id. I should get more soon I hope - but Bill's was purty big ;)

Actually that Nest is a small frag from my big colony that I knocked off. I originally got it from Sean, looks reaaalllly nice with tiny blue polyps. Hey Richard thanks for the "frags" gimme a heads up on your next tort, before Bill runs in!!! :lol

the coral in the first pic is the cali tort :) they have alot of green when they come in from ORA, and then after they are in your tank, they turn more purple and blue after they have been in your tank for a while.

[edit] well, i dont know now that i look at it more closely. i did cut two small frags today anthony, so you can have one and mike can have one.

Is the first one from us? If so, then if it's mounted on a plug it's an tort from ORA or if it's mounted on a plastic plant pick then it's an A. austera from seaworld (at least that's what they are calling them).

It was labeled A. austera and it is on the sea world plug. I got 2 kinds, but I don't remember the other one I'll take a picture tomorrow, both look fantastic. BTW how do you get them off the plug? Hey Ace thanks for thinking of me. LMK what I owe you.

i got the same one labeled A Austera a while back.. exact same coloring.. mine has turned brown though with jus a little hint of green around the base,, did these come from their frag tanks on the roof?? might explain the brown out

You mean on the roof of the building?? No these were in the big sps tank in the store.

Anthony,, Sorry i was refering to the Grow out vats on the Roof of seaworld, wheree they grow most of their frags.. if these came from there, it might explain why mine browned out the way they did

Sat, 10th Feb 2007, 02:58 PM

They've been inviting us to come see their setup but we haven't had time to go check it out. So I really don't know anything about where they are growing out the frags or their lighting (except that they like 10k's- Ushio I think he said). Mine started to brown so I moved it up high and it colored back up.

They were using a combination on natural sunlight and XM 20k's the last time I was there.

that is correct Jim... Richard... mine is directly under a 400w 12k reeflux and is a real nice MUD color :roll

Richard
Sat, 10th Feb 2007, 05:14 PM
Well at least that makes your choice easy, try moving it down and see what it does. Mine's about 10-12" down and in between a 400w 10k and and 250w 12k (both reeflux).

Is there any way to have a group tour or maybe a meeting there???

JimD
Sat, 10th Feb 2007, 08:05 PM
Its been done before, we had a meeting there a few years ago and they were very gracious. Got to see their coral propagation areas along with above the shark exhibit and a close up view of their monster surge device on the 300,000 gallon main display, it was very cool! If anyones interested in organizing a Seaworld meeting, I can supply the name of the person their who can get the ball rolling. Something like this would be great for new members as well some of the older ones.

They have said that they would love to do something again so I think it's just a matter of Maast trying to do another one. This is the time of year to do it as their busy season is not too far away. I thought the Palleta event out there was awesome! Would be cool to see more of those types of events.
