my 30 cube isnt exactly where i want it to be so i think im going to try to add some mechanical filtration so i can run carbon and/or phosban (small algae outbreak)

problem, for some reason the trim on the oceanic cube is really thick and im not sure any HOB filter will sit there. anyone ever run a similar setup? comments? suggestions?

im currently running a coralife superskimmer which works well but is extremely finicky and the tank is only moderately stocked: 2 small clowns, algae blennie, and a peppermint shrimp. 1 inch sand bed, about 60ish lbs of LR, etc . . .

also, im tired of dealing with the suction cups on the maxi-jets. (one fell today and i came home to a half deep sandbed half bareback bottom tank) anyone got a better way to hang them in the tank? if not i may replace both with a single tunze 6025

thanks in advance

:)

Well for me I have the emperor 400 filters on mine, and I have an oceanic tank. You can alway try the canister filters. About the suction cups, you should clean the area with a razor blade and go to HEB and buy the white suction cups.... They only cost .99 alot better than the black ones. I replace all mine and they have not fallen off in 6 months... lets see if I can hit a yr or more..lol. Hopefully that helps ya.

what dept at heb are the white suction cups in?

does your trim along the back wall of the oceanic hang over the tank?

Yeah but I bought the older oceanic tanks... I don't know if it's the same trim but the emperor 400 filters fit fine, look at my pics. Go to the Auto section and look for the suction cups.. the are large about size of a half dollar size and clearish off white.. If you can't find them, hopefully you live in Austin, bc I bought extras incase they ran out. I could sell you one pack.

Hmmm, I'll have to check HEB also. Now there's going to be a huge run on suction cups from at HEB till they figure it out and start jacking up the price.

That is the reason why I bought them, my two maxi jet 1200 black suction cups fall off after 6 months, I was ****ed and called the vender to hear that they recommend changing them out every 5 months. The black cups.. 6.99. <--- That is gay!! So I went to HEB all ****ed and found them. Had them on for 6 months and going strong.!!

AS far as your question about running carbon on your tank. I bought a small fluval filter and use it strictly for running carbon and just put the inlet/outlet hoses into my sump. You could do the same thing just on your tank if you don't have a sump. What's nice about this is I can also put other chems in one of the other sections if I want like phosban etc.

CPR bakpak, is a protein skimmer/mech filtration unit. Maybe this will work for you...

it has a place to run carbon or the like?

if so that might be my answer since im moderately happy with the super skimmer

funny thing is i was standing at finaddict yesterday staring at the bakpak running on the tank on the counter, yet hardly paid any attention to how it was working or what it was doing haha

cliff, i was also not ruling out the canisters as a viable option

I believe there is a place to put carbon in, or you could take out the bio balls, and run a carbon pack in its place.... Aquarium designs on Brookhollow and 281 has new ones on the shelf, cheap too (around $100)! Go by and look at it and see...... Having bioballs and live rock together is sort of redundant. No need for the balls if you have ample live rock to carryout the denitrification process, hence do away with the balls and replace with a carbon filter pack. Another choice would be the Prizm deluxe skimmer by Red Sea (also around $100 w/upgrade)..... The Deluxe version has a place for carbon filtration paks... ALTHOUGH, I have one of these on my 30g (w/o the deluxe upgrade-$25) and it doesnt pull that much skimmate, sorry to say, I would NOT recommend this brand. But if you want, I will sell you mine for $25, you can buy the upgrade for $25, and have what you need for $50...Done deal... PM me if your interested.... Good luck..Erick...

Even if you fix the suction cup issue, you'll probably be much happier with the flow of the nanostream. There's really no comparison; the flow is gentler right in front of the pump, yet definitely moves way more water throughout the tank.

my new deltec MCE600 has a chamber for carbon/whatever, and it's one heck of a skimmer besides, but they are pretty proud of them($475). i never expected so much from a HO unit, that is not unyill i paid that much for one! it's also quiet, and requires almost no fiddling/adjusting.oh, and, not to be a stickler, but carbon/phosban would technically be chemical filtration. a pad, or sponge(or if your truly old school, some filter floss!) would be mechanical.
