What is going on in tank?
The BAD
Cloudy/smokey water not like calcium precipitation.
Dead and dying pods, tons of them.
Dying/dead snails.
Dying/dead hermits.
Water smells bad.
Dying/dead bristle worms.
The GOOD
The corals are still open to some extent.
All pumps are working.
Heater is working.
Help, please!

Do you have an anemone and is it smiling? Hows your skimmer acting? Might be a spawning event but it usually wont kill snails or pods...

I can't be sure as to what it going on but carbon and water changes are the answer.

No amemone, no skimmer. It's a 24 Gallon NC.

All out of carbon but I am mixing up water as we type.
Any other ideas? Bacteria bloom...?

seems more like precipitation to me if you are getting a white powder settling out. i think waterchanges and carbon are you best bet for now.

This is what I was thinking, especially since it is open and looking good!

I don't think so, it's not a white powder. It's really like a smoke not particles. I could be wrong though.

My feather duster came completely out of its tube. Worm and crown.
Is he doomed?

How much circulation do you have? I'm wondering if whatever is going on is replacing the O2 in the water column and making it difficult for respiration. Get some serious flow rolling in there to vent it to the surface.

Maybe a pump gone bad? Just thinkin out loud here. Heater? Whats the temp?

OK
I did a 4.5 gallon water change. Sucked out all the dead stuff I could find. I lost a handfull of snail, few hermits, a peppermint and possibly a tube worm.
I aimed a return towards the surface and lowed my water level to create water turbulance in the back compartment.
I will be leaving to get some "Walmart Special" carbon in a bit here
Mike - I took your advice and created some air to water surface mixing, lol.
Jim - All pumps and my heater are fine, they were the first thing I checked. The temp is a bit elevated 82 but this is normal for my tank.

I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago, cloudy water, bad smell, dead pods...lost a red coco worm, an emerald crab...a few snails, I did water changes and ran carbon for a day and it all cleared up in a few days...all's well now but I never did find out what happened or what caused it, I hadn't done anything different or changed my routine ....

I got the carbon in there. Hopefully everything clears up like in DaBird's case. I guess we'll see.

If things don't clear up overnight, consider this:
I have several Hiatt torpedoes (tribase carbon), starter bacteria and a pump. Take a torpedo, add some 1" tubing, and see what happens. This system CURED 170 lbs of live rock overnight...
Let me know. 663.8079.

Thanks Bill, I'll keep you in mind!
Looks as if both school and work are canceled for me tomorrow once again. Woot, another snow day!

Another Question
I mentioned earlier (in this post) that my feather duster left its tube, worm and crown. The feather duster still seems alive but has a sort of cotton growing around it.
Is the feater duster dying?
Any suggestions on what to do with it?

yeah we just bought a rock with about 40 baby dusters on it. Not the colony fans but real baby dusters. As we pulled it from the bag it was noticed that about 4 of them were loose and hopping about. Put them all in the tank and they have since moved fromt he original rock to cover the whole tank. It seems fine to me.

This is what I was thinking but I am still unsure.
BTW the tank cleared up and everything is opening up. Looks like I may have adverted a disaster this time. I am still keeping an eye on my tank inhabitants.
