detritus removers for barebottom

So, just out of curiosity, what detritus removal process do those of you with barebottom tanks use? I vaccuum mine to the sump and remove it with a filter sock, but I want something that will kinda keep it cleaner in between cleanings.

Can nassarius snails survive in a BB system? I know when I used to have sand, they would surface for feeding, then go back under. Will the lack of microfauna in the sand be detrimental?
