I am going to be shopping for some power heads over the thanks-giving holiday. However all the things I have tried seem to be a little stronger than I need them to be. I have a 55 gal all softies like polyps and zoo’s and a few feathers as well as some zenias. “Think that’s how you spell it” anyway any ideas how I can get a gentle flow and not a torrent?

ow yah i was using my 350 gal/h pump to try to move the water around and it did a very good job. Just turned everything sideways. :P

Make sure they have a grounding probe for safety, and if you buy the Seio I believe they are adjustable to the amount of flow needed?

You can try some maxi jets with a hydor flo attached to it. I had one in my aquapod and it put a nice gentle wave in the tank. It made my gsp sway gently.

i think perhaps your problem isn't so much how strong your flow is, but that it unidirectional and laminar. you need to break it up.

solutions like Hydor Flo, SCWD, Wave makers, you name it, all will do the job. remember, water movement in nature, even in lagoonal areas, is chaotic.

My first time diving I was struck by how wierd it felt to have eddies of hot and cold water moving all over my body.

personally, in a 55, I would probably do a Mag 5 w/ a SCWD on it as one of your cheapest options - and have the outlets at either end of the tank.

(remember the SCWD will reduce the pumps output, so it's not as 'wow' as it sounds.) bigger outlet pipes reduce the speed of the water flow as well.

A hydor flow attaches directly to your MJs and circulates the flow in a angled counter clock wise motion. The SCWD is attached to your return pump and has 2 outlets. The outlets alternate between each other. The size of your return pumps determines the length and speed the scwd will alternate currents

Hydor= junk

SCWD= good product.

I got a hydor and it did nothing but break up my flow. Not to mention that daily it would lock up.
