View Full Version : Can you frag a brain coral?

Ok...I would like to get a brain coral. Is it possible to get a frag, or are they all wild caught never to be fragged?

you can frag them, but since they do not have branches like SPS, and are typicaly round, it is a bit different than fragging most other corals. I have been able to break big brains into a few smaller ones, but ended up losing a few heads in the process..... I would just buy a small one if I were you.....

Theyre quite hard to frag. The best method I have seen is to section it in two by tightly wrapping a rubberband around it. It will eventually cause "death" where the rubberband is and you can cut it in half with a dremmel or tile saw from there.

I had a guy mention that to me since I've had an elegance living and prospering for several months. Figured if it made it this long it could be fragged. Yeah and I'm going to do that why? You can find them as small as an inch. I have one that started on a rock that was 1/2" when I bought it. Sean has seen it.

You can frag a brain, just cut in half with a tile saw. I do it all the time.

you can cut with a tile saw. Borneman at Macna used a tile saw to cut just about anything could think of.

Why a tile saw? Does it have to be a TILE saw? I can just see going in to Home Depot to rent a tile saw and tell them it's to cut up my brain! :lol

there pretty cheap...but yes it needs to be a tile saw dont try it with a blade made to cut wood. and yep, no meds no prep just slice it up!

HERE (http://www.fragexchange.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3757) is a brain frag I got from MACNA after Eric sliced it up with a tile saw.

THIS (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=91511) Tile Saw is all you need to cut corals. Just be sure to wash it out real good afterwards as the saltwater will corrode it real fast. To clean the blade of any rust before you cut again on it, Eric just cut a piece of scrape tile.

The brain is doing good and is healing slowly.
