Aquarium Systems skimmer help

Ok.. so when i picked up the last batch of live rock, the woman tossed in an Aquarium Systems protein skimmer (HOT).. yeah.. I know.. they are known for being crap... is there anything I can do to it to boost it's efficency? Or should I just turn it into an objet d’Art?

On the nice side some skimmer is better than no skimmer?

even if it doesn't work?.. lol.. well.. at least it does circulate the water!
