Anybody have pro's vs. con's on the total carbon filtration system? I'm basically starting from scratch. 135 gal. reef with a few fish. I hear that the tribase system removes almost all the nitrates and nitrites, but what about the proteins? Also doesn't carbon remove/absorb some of the minerals that you want in the water for a healhty reef?

I've been using this system on my 215 for about 4 months. The jury is still out. Fish seem to be doing well, along with anemones and softies. The SPS... Well, the biggest problem there is that I let my salinity drop out of control a few weeks ago. We'll see how they do.

BTW, if you want to SEE my setup, just let me know. You are welcome to come by. I'm going to set my daughter's nano up with it.

Thnaks, that would be great. I am going to meet with a water main contractor tomorrow for 12" diameter PVC for making some DIY carbon tubes. Did you use the fiber wrap torpedos? I should have all the parts together in about three more days.

If you want this to work, just buy the whole package from Richard/Mark. If you try and fool with it or short cut it, it generally doesn't work well...

I talked with Mark at length and the only thing that I am changing is the canisters to replace the torpedos. I will still have the correct flow rate, correct amount of carbo, and correct amount of ph rock. I also ordered parts from marine depot to make a spray bar with four adjustable outlets.

I am going to move this to the DIY section. There is just not enough info out on the HIATT system yet.
