Shot me some hummers this evening.

So did they taste like chicken? lol :P Cool pics, last year I had a couple that would come and sit in one of my trees out back and I loved watching them. I guess with all the plants and flowers coming out now that they are busy humming along. :)

A lot of the hummers should be migrating through this time of year from mexico. With the dry conditions and lack of wild flowers it could be a hard year for them around here. I'll have 4-5 feeders in my back yard for them by the end of the week. I have a cool feeder that attaches to my window with a suction cup. They are territorial over the feeders and I have to put out several for them so they don't fight over them. I also have a lot of flowering plants in my garden that the hummers like. Leaving out dryer lint for nesting material is a good idea too. Needless to say, my yard is a popular spot for hummers in my neighborhood.

My neighbor, who works for me, has some pictures of a preying mantis on a hummingbird feeder - that CAUGHT and KILLED a hummingbird!

I have lots of hummingbirds in my backyard in the last few weeks. I have quite a few jasmine plants and lots of wildflowers. They are so fun to watch and they just keep coming.. I can sit on my back patio and watch them come and go for a few hours every evening.

These are great pictures!

I love birds too. I got our backyard certified as a wildlife habitat through Tx Parks and Wildlife.

Dryer lint is great! You can use an onion bag to put it in and hang it. Granted, it is not exactly beautiful to look at, but it is fun to watch the birds pull it out. You can also use hair from your hair brush...or your dog's. I know it sounds gross, but the birds seem to like it.

The purple martins are back at our house! It's good to see them. I'll be setting out hummingbird feeders and re-digging the pond soon. The dog ate it! :angry

I read something about a guy up near Comfort that had all these hummers in his yard. He had an old junk car sitting in his yard. The hummers had picked the stuffing clean out of the seats of the car for nesting material. Old cars have something like straw that they used for stuffing.

We got our feeders out yesterday. I think we have 4 or 5 in the yard, plus the flowers they like to feed on.

This year hummer count seems way down. Last year we had anywhere from 40 to 60 of them in the evening. No kidding. Like a swarm of them. Maybe they all will show up eventually.

I'm afraid the drought may not have helped them. No flowering plants, no food, less hummers. I'd be willing to bet the survivors are going to be all over yards that have feeders. Folks need to keep that in mind. If you are going to put out feeders, they need to be kept filled. The hummers are going to depend on the food you put out. If you stop feeding they will starve. Hummers have extrememly high energy output and need to eat their own weight in food everyday. Going without food for just a couple of days is enough for them to starve.
