IMO there are much better options for biological filtration in a reef tank (which some searches and/or discussions with people on this site more knowledgeable than myself could educate you about). There may be a use for something like that for mechanical filtration- such as running carbon and/or floss (either periodically or constantly depending on your preference) so it would depend on the size/shape/cost of the item you are talking about. A simple, compact, canister filter works great for mechanical so I personally don't use any type of traditional "wet/dry".

something like what Slaychild just posted would be ideal and is what I use (mine is just much uglier and redneck because it's homemade, but it does the job). A combination sump/fuge of some type that can house equipment, hold filter media if wanted, circulate water and hold macroalgae is invaluable in this hobby in my opinion.

Ok not to sound like a noob... but I am. What is the main difference between a sump and a wet/dry? I have a wet dry without any bio balls. Is there a good website to read about how sumps work and the idea behind it?

Which is best for a 55 gal tank?

Do not mean to steal your thread, if I do.

well right now im running an HOB ehiem filter and an HOB red sea skimmer. here in the next month i plan on doing nothing but a softie tank. for the last 6 months i have been using a strip light that only has 40 watts so i could only do so much. this coming friday im buying two jebo t-5's so i can start harvesting softies. i just assumed that since i was moving up from mushrooms to more colorful softies then i should look into getting a better filteration. i never have time to do research on filteration because im always at work and my pc at the house is still busted. all i can do is go by what you guys tell me to do. if yall think you can put together a pretty good filteration between 50-100 bucks then by all means let me know. so far all i could find was that proclear for 40.00

Not to worry if you don't want the wet dry no problem. :w00t You can use it with or without Bio balls. If you don't want it that is no big deal. I will just put it back on my shelf. Remember that you will still need an overflow box. They run about $49.00 -$60.00 new. Many places sell them.
