View Full Version : Sea Biscuits Group Order for March 4th, Austin Frag Swap

thedude
Tue, 7th Feb 2006, 02:53 AM
Hey all,

I've decided to host a group order through sea biscuits to correspond with our frag swap. If all goes according to plan, I'll be able to get the frags that morning and bring them to the swap. The website to look at is http://www.sea-biscuits.us/

This is what they responded with:

"Hi John, absolutely, we've been refreshing the site but should have that complete (finally!) sometime this week, all types of weird and wacked out pieces from all over. I am a big believer in discounts so just let me know what you would be interested in and we can go from there. Discounts depend on the piece (rariety), as well as volume.

I use Deltec putty to mount (only putty that does NOT burn frags, I never lose frags) my frags and put them on 1 inch plastic screens which fit perfectly into egg crate, the putty stays soft enough so its easy for the end user to simply squeeze the plastic base and the frag pops right off."

I'll start listing what everyone wants back at this page.

John

They have a special with 6 frags for $119. Does anyone want to go in 3 ways and get the frag special. I am looking at two, so if we go 3 ways it would be roughly $20 a frag before discount and shipping if any.

I am only looking at purchasing two so if anyone else wants in, that's cool. As long as we can do the full order of 6. I live in SA and will be willing to drive up to Austin to pick up and meet at FinAddict for delivery thereafter.

These are the ones I am looking into:
Product Code: FP103
Location: Bali
Species: A. Valida

Product Code: FP107
Location: Solomon
Species: A. Secale

If I don't get any takers then just cancel me out of this one.

George.

I can't see alot of the pics. I just clicked on the Discount Frag Packs link, (http://lasps.us/frags/packs/packspage1/ ), and chose from there. That was the only page I can see pics of the frags from. I guess I'll try from home to see if it's just my computer at work or if it's their site that is not showing the pics.

The site, except the discount frag page, is basically all under construction and has no pics.

The only possible corals I found were the ones in the 6 for $229 section. I kinda think thats way too much to spend for a 3/4" frag. Especially since those corals don't look like they are very rare.

gcantu
Tue, 7th Feb 2006, 04:38 PM
That'll work. I'm in, let me know when we need to pay and how much.

gcantu
Tue, 7th Feb 2006, 04:42 PM
Just click on the boxes that have the (x) on them and it should take you to another page with the full pic of the frag you want to see. Maybe they will have the site up within the next couple of days and allow us to see the rest of the pics. I may just want to order more if I get to see all the pics. I believe we have until the end of the month to see what we want to order for March 4th pickup.

Tom responded and said he has zoo's, rics, three types of xenia, blastos, etc.. still waiting on a clear response on when the site will be finished but they're working as fast as possible.

He also is trying to work out our discount, as it may be on a rarity basis.

OK guys, I am going to have to change the pickup location from FinAddict to my house. I only live about 2-3 miles from FinAddict. I figure I wouldn't want to stand out in the parking lot waiting for pickups while the stuff hung out in my truck. I can just take them home and wait there. I will post directions when the time comes.

I am the only one whos dissapointed? I got 3 frags, only ordered 2. 2 of them were the totally wrong corals, and one of them was totally RTN'd. I order a blue milli and a chips, the chips looks fine, but i got a frag labeled "teal" that was OK, with a small spot of RTN, and a frag labeled 'cobalt' that was totally white when it came in.....i dont know what the deal is but this guy messed up my order...

First off I love my frags - just awesome! Thanks again for putting all of this together Dude, great job! Sadly my blue Milli arrived dead but that's OK, the freebie he sent is just gorgeous. John,
Once again, I appreciate your work on this order. My "chips" looks great but the "Tahitian Tide" frag right now even looks ALL white under actinics. There seems to be no color at all. The bonus frag looks the same. I'll see what happens when my MH come on later but as I say, as of now they look to be dead. I'm not PO'd but I hope there is no problem getting replacements, if need be. I hope you will be happy with the frag I gave you.

Yep thanks sooo much for putting this together. I enjoyed the swap, meeting new members and you. nice store too. these corals have taken a beating though. i cannot follow up on my last PM to you as the PM is not working. the two corals marked 'pink mili' and 'blue mili' had lost all water and were bleached on arrival. The Tahitian Tide was dry, bleached and crushed. the corals marked 'Rad' and 'nuke' both had tissue loss.

Well as of this morning all three mili's are goners, the tenuis is half rtn'd and the 'Rad' is slowly losing tissue.

On a high note, the chips and the tri-color look great!

Will you please pass this on to the seabiscuit people? I tried to email them this morning but thier site is down

thanks

Ross,
I'd say let John (thedude) work this out. He was the one that got all this together with them. He told me yesterday that the guy said to check everything out and that he (seabisquits) would make things good. I'm not telling you what you should do but i would let John give it a shot. I just met him for the first time yesterday but IMHO he's a stand-up guy. I just say give him a chance.

My halides are on now and I can for sure say that the "Tahitian Tide" and the Teal frag are RTN'd. They are solid white. My "Chips" frag has great polyp extension and color.

All,

I'll get into contact with Tom today and let you know what kind of outcome I'll be working towards. It sounds to me that all the millis we ordered simply didn't make it through the shipping process. Thanks for the vote of confidence as well guys. Tom called me this mornind and I unfortunately missed his call but expressed that his website is down and took his email with it. He's very sorry for the inconvience but as I've said, I'm on top of it!

He just left me a voicemail, he said that we can do another order and he will ship us the frags, or he will refund us our money. Sounds like a good guy.

Ok what I'd really like to do is compile a listing on this page of what RTN'd or was DOA. Tom asked me to compile this list for another order to be shipped to us in a few weeks, with frags he'll have mounted and stabilized.

Mojo:
-Crown Blue Milli - DOA

Fishypets:
-Crown Blue Milli - DOA
-Emerald Danae - RTN

Ross:
-Crown Blue Milli - DOA
-Teal Bonus Frag - RTN

Hammondegge:
-Tahitian Tide - DOA
-Blue Milli - DOA
-Pink Milli - DOA
-Tongan Radioactus (RAD) - RTN
-"Nuke" - RTN
-Chips

BigBird:
-Tahitian Tide - DOA
-"Tealinator" Freebie - DOA

Gcantu
-Freebie - DOA
-Coral from frag pack - DOA

Jroescher
-Montipora Hodgsoni - DOA

Those are the problems I've heard of as of now. The milli's all seem to have been very poor shippers whether this be due to the recent mounting on to the frag plugs, or Tom's recent system switchover.

Again, let me know if you'd be alright with putting this order together in several weeks time, or if you'd like to speak to him about getting a refund.

Thanks again guys for a great frag swap.

My thanks for putting this together also John.

Between the frags I got from other members and the extra freebies from Sea-Buscuits, I lost track of what was what.

But.... my Montipora Hodgsoni is very much dead. The Undata is doubtful and the Hoeksemae maybe (see a couple of polyps out in the white parts).
Nothing is colored up at all. I got something labeled Purple, but it is far from purple-maybe yellow or brown, but it's covered in polyps and seems healthy.

Mine were all double bagged with no leakers and the superman frag I purchases was in 6 or 7 bags. It literally had a shield of plastic bag. All of my frags are mounted in my tank with the Deltec putty he used to mount them as well and are fully extended.

Again I think these frags were from coral colonies already stressed by a fluctuation in KH Tom had experienced in his tanks, and that this was further complicated by them being freshly cut. Let's hope the next batch does better!

fishypets
Sun, 5th Mar 2006, 10:15 PM
John,

Thanks for staying on top of this I'm sure you have better things to do. If we decide to replace the frags I would like to request that the freshly cut frags be unmounted. We also may find out that no matter what the milli that everyone lost is not a very good shipper and sometimes this happens.

Ross,

As of now my blue polyped monti seems to be STN'N. There is still tissue as of now but I will check for you again tomorrow. I really think that a freshly cut frag placed in the middle of puddy is not a good thing. I prefer my frags unmounted so I can do what I want with them. The plug limits you if you did not drill a bunch of holes in your live rock befoe adding to your tank.

To all who lost frags, please be patient and this will all be worked out in no time. Heck there are some sites that don't even offer guarntees much less service after the sale. I think Tom has shown that he cares about making us happy and given time he will.

What I would like to do is reship to you guys in 2 weeks. That will give me the time to get my new system straight, get these pieces fragged and stable. I will of course cover the cost of shipping.

The other option, and this is available to whomever in the group wants, I can provide them with a refund. I cannot of course refund on freebies, but will replace on the next shipment to you guys. Please send me sincere apologies to the guys in the group. Feel free to call me if you wish

Yes, admirable. Especially with such a fragile product. I lost all seven frags, the last of which went really fast overnight. the only thing that i can think of that they all had in common was no air in the bags. i believe if there is no air or oxygen in then there can be no gas exchange resulting in high concentrations of toxins in the water. am i anywhere close with this? anyhow, this together with alk issues and the system change at seabiscuits maybe these corals were just worn out.
Thanks Tom for standing behind your corals, that goes a long ways.

All,

I got another email from Tom, read it and let me know what you think yet again.

"OK here's the deal, got in some nice montis and acros last week. Quite a few of the acros took off in the last few days. The ultimate cause of my whole nightmare was that my membrane on my ro/di was fried and I did not know it, when I cut the system over I had 400 gallons of ammonia contaminated water mix in, the rest is history. Once I found this out I did mass water changes (to the extent that my orp was 150, orp of freshsaltwater is 133 to give you an idea). I need the system to sit a few weeks (it would be stupid to get anymore in or put any more in from my old stock which is at a friends but in a spare tank and has colored down), and then I will get in more acros. I have the blue millis now, a chips, and tahitian tide. So far frags have hung in there, the montis are doing well and i will post pictures of them this week. I also recieved a wicked sarmentosa that I will post this week, fire coral and cats paw.

Its up to you guys on what we do here, the offer still stands on the refund, I can ship what I have if you like, and fill in the rest order when this thing FINALLY settles down. I think its pretty close as these colonies did well for several days but needs time to settle out"

I think we should wait until his stock is healthy and there's less risk of loss during transport and acclimation. It sounds like these poor corals are going through hell right now, and it would probably be to our advantage to delay the shipment until they're healthier. Personally, I really want my chips frag, so I'm willing to wait and do not want a refund.

I know Steve and I got these emails today:

Email 1:

Eureka! Well I have confirmed it, when I set this system up I used Silicone II instead of Silicone I. While it does not have anti mold stuff in it, whatever is in the stuff puts off something which is enough to cause trites at .025 on the salifert scale. Whatever the case, it will take me a week to shut this down, remove the old and resilicone, but I should be good in a few weeks, will keep you posted

My Response:

Haha jeeze this tank is becoming a monster in disguise. Have you indeed fragged most of the corals to allow them some time to encrust onto the putty? Also, what do you think a reasonable ETA to receive these corals is?

2nd Email:

I have a few pieces in the system now but they look horrible because of the toxin, I can pull the vast majority from varying sources very quickly without a problem, I should have the new silicone in place in the next few days, change out500 gal and probably a few weeks from there. Call me if you like, Im at 804-334-9875, as I said before I am more than willing to do a refund, I had no idea when using that crap it would cause this as others reported good luck with it but this HAS to be whats causing the issue. Trust me I am very aggrevated about the situation, all this money tied up in it and no revenue. I have been keeping sps for 10 years and NEVER seen anything like it

I still leave it in ya'lls hands but I do know that a few people feel that it is money already spent and they're willing to wait for healthy frags. If you do want a refund call him at the number above and let him know what group order you were in. My name is John Howerton and he should know what you're talking about.

John,
Please understand that nothing bad was intended toward you. I don't mind waiting but I just feel that a larger frag is warranted. I am sorry that you are in the middle of this and only did it for us. My thanks to you and an apology if you think I was upset with you.

Steve,

No apology necessary my friend! I also am sorry that I'm in the middle of all this but like Clint said, good things come to those who wait. I'll keep all of you updated as I've tried to do since March or earlier lol.

Well, I talked to Tom the owner today. He said that he would be shipping 20 FREE frags to us next week, just for our waiting for him to get this system back up and running. These frags are coming from Chicago. He said his system would be up and running and he should be able to ship by Sept. 1st. He really apologized for this and wanted to make things right. Just thought to give everyone an update.

Looks to me to be about two (2) a piece and we can draw straws on the last five (5). These are for the people that Paid for the first group as a PEACE OFFERING until we get the frags in Sept. Will keep updated.

I've been talking to Tom about all of this as well and hope to receive the box of free frags next Friday. I'm trying to get him to get a list of who gets what pieces or write it on the bag.

Yes I actually have good news to report!

Tom is opening a retail store and should have full replacements of our original frags in early September, or he is still offering a refund. The really cool thing is that his business partner in Chicago, is sending us 20 free frags this coming Friday! I have no idea what we'll be getting but he said they were cherry frags and again, this is his way of saying sorry for everything. We'll still get replacements for the originals in September.

On another note...

Sorry for the short notice guys but I'm getting in some of the Deltec reef putty and wanted to know if anyone wanted any. This stuff is purple, doesn't burn frags, and is the best reef epoxy available.

The cost is 12 dollars a tube.

The order is being shipped Tuesday so I will not accept any orders past midnight Monday.

My paypal address is jhowerton@mail.utexas.edu

Thought about that, as I'll be driving down Saturday to attend as well. If ya'll want, I could bring the frags with me I guess (I do not recommend this) or we could find someone with a large tank willing to look after them until everyone can pick them up (*looks in Clint and Robert's direction).

that might scare the crap out of me. i just moved tanks about a couple of weeks ago, but the system is stable (all mature water and rock and sand) with all params in place sooo i could do it if you need me to.
let me know if you need it. thanks for all the hard work john.

Will you be driving through SA?? If so, can you bring mine down with you? I live a bit off IH35 near 1604 and can meet you as you drive into town.
Thanks,

If I have enough advance notice, I can find a need to drive to Austin on Friday and get mine from you then. Just as long as it's in the early afternoon.

Driving to Port A for a frag is just little bit out of the way for me.

thedude

Ok so here's the deal, when I receive the frags in Austin I will put them in either Hammondegge's or Fishypet's tank to hold them. These are two awesome tanks and the frags should be able to recover nicely.

I am driving down to Port A Saturday but right now yahoo has me going around San Antonio... for you guys in SA that have driven to Port A before, what's the fastest way?

gcantu
Thu, 13th Jul 2006, 08:14 AM
Well from SA, I usually drive I35 south to 37 south towards Corpus and then from there follow the signs to Port A. If you drive I35 south you should see the 37 south exit a couple of miles after you pass Splashtown. From SA to Corpus, it is around a 1.5 to 2 hour drive.

Yahoo may have you driving through loop 1604 to 37 south. That can also be done without having to drive through SA. The only drawback to that route is that there are stop lights along the way, it's not a straight shot out and can take longer depending on traffic.

False alarm guys, the business partner in Chi-town couldn't get the frags out this weekend. He's apparently the manager of a retail store and just didn't have time. I expect them within the next week and will keep everyone posted. I will find a tank locally to house the frags when they come in so no one needs to be in a huge rush.

when they are large enough to frag. moooah hahaha :angel

So how are we gonna divide these up?

they arrived unlabeled so we dont know what they are yet. all are a little brown but look healthy so. john thought we should wait for them to color up a little, try to identify them, and see how many make it before dividing them up. they went into the tank late in the day yesterday and lights are not on yet today. i will try to get a picture a little later.

Sun, 23rd Jul 2006, 02:00 PM
here are some pics for your identifying pleasure. for those who want to play they will be numbered left to right and front to back 1-20. ie first row left (1) second row left (2) third row left(3) first row second from the left (4). if anyone has photoshop skills and wants to drop the numbers in.....
they all appear to be doing well except 14 looks pretty skeletal. no rtn but a few very thin skinned frags.
lmk if you want a close up of any frag in particular and i will do my best to get a good one.

Before I go about dividing the frags up, we really need to let them settle and regain strength. They've traveled from Chicago to Austin, been acclimated into a new tank, and they need time. Once we start to see some color and PE we can begin to try to identify and divy them up.

If Robert doesn't mind, I'd love to give them a week or two to recuperate.

These frags are ready to be picked up from Robert whenever. Please get with him about making arrangements to pick them up.

Each person will be receiving one Tier 1 frag and one Tier 2 frag. Robert and I have already divided them up so all you have to do is pick up your free corals!
