Well it happened yesterday... My dwarf fuzzy lion got me. I was reaching in the tank picking up a coral off the gravel and he came out from behind the rock and brushed me thinking it was feeding time. I didn't even see him comin. I'm usually keep a close eye on him when I'm in the water with him, but I just slipped up.

Anyway, I got one good poke on the top of my hand near the wrist. It started to huet pretty quickly, but I ran hot water over it for a good 10 minutes. It felt like a wasp sting, my whole hand swelled up and stiffened a little, and my thumb and pinky went partially numb. My hand was bright red and had a light ache/throbbing until I fell asleep 6 or 7 hours later. This morning all the evidence that was left was a little poke mark in my hand that looks like a hypodermic needle *****.

Just thought it was interesting, and now I know that I'm not going to have respiratory failure or allergic reaction if it ever happens again. Hopefully it doesn't, getting stung isn't my idea of a fun afternoon.

If you have lions or anything venomous I would recommend you keep some meat tenderizer around the house for first aid.

That doesn't mean you can't ever have an allergic reaction to it. Some people develop allergies after years of contact with something. My wife used to love lobster and now she can't have any shellfish or she turns into a red faced chipmunk.

If it happens again, run hot water over it, as hot as you can stand and then a poultice of meat tenderizer. The heat and the tenderizer will help break down the venom.

Yeah, the hot water saved me. It's the same thing you do for a stingray hit. Luckily, even after wade fishing my whole life, I've never been hit by one of those. I think it's the acid in the meat tenderizer and coke that helps break down the toxin, so I wonder if other acids-vinegar, lemon juice, etc., work.

My mom tolerated the rats and pinkies for the snakes that I kept in the freezer (and thawed in the kitchen) when I was a kid. My wife lets me fill the freezer with every fish food imaginable. I just can't wait till she sees the jar of pee I'm keepin in the microwave "in case of emergency."

The heat in the hot water will break down the the venom - it works best on an extremity. ADOLPH'S (and only Adolph's) contains an enzyme that will also break down the toxin. But you have get it into the wound.

The enzyme is called papain and it comes from papayas. Just a little factoid from the "for what its worth" department of MAAST Inc.

Yours felt like a bee sting? Lucky dude.

I got hit by my lion a while back but I felt like I was going to die. My Lion is fairly large and did stick me really good on one of my fingers. Hot water helped but didn't do much to really help with the pain. I was in screaming pain for a good 2-3 hours. My finger was swollen and cracking for a good several months after.

The very first time a person is exposed to poison ivy nothing will happen, you can rub it all over your body, play with it, make a shirt out of it or whatever. On the first exposure your body records the antigen. The second time and each additional time you get the reaction people are familiar with. It causes an allergic reaction. You can develop an allergy to the venom of the fish and you could get respitory failure if you get an anaphalactic reaction. Think of it like a bee sting, some people become allergic to it, some do not. You may get stung by the fish 20 more time and just suffer a little pain, possibly even get reduced symptoms, or of course develop and allergy if you are unlucky.

The best thing though is to just not let it happen again. Be careful in that tank!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a masochist... just no matter how careful I am, there is always a scorpion, cactus, bee, ant bed, or whatever around to get me. Getting stung is just part of life. As I see it, this whole lionfish sting thing is kinda like trippin on acid a few times when I was a teenager-I'm glad it happened, but it's not something I want to do again. In other words, I learned something about myself through this. Just another experience.

Best advice I ever got as a child- "If it has a mouth, it can bite you."

I never thought about it like that, oh no, one day those copepods are going to get me. I can see it now, copepods all over my hand eating me alive, then the ceriths get in on it, then the zoos noooo!!!! :lol

Stings happen though, like you said sometimes nothing you can do about it.
