Ok, anyone ever had to get rid of these things because they were obnoxiously intrusive? I planted some a while ago thiking they were cool, now , theyre taking over some very valuable realestate, Im talkin sps type realestate, these things are on rock, not glass. I really dont wanna kalk em if I dont have to and removing the rock isnt an option,. Anyone had success getting these things off of rock? I thought covering small patches of them with black plastic? gggrrr...

Jim,

I just peal them off the rock and take them to a LFS for trade. They usually love getting them. The purple base will peal off with just a finger nail or a similar implement. I sometimes attach them to rubble. I just use a few drops of glue to sort of tack weld them down until they attach. They can be toxic to SPS and other similar corals. I had them kill the base of an SPS that they over grew.

hammondegge - GSP = green star polyps

hmmmmmmmmm, too late, I got them. It looks to me like they might be pealed off. Certainly not easily. >_< If the GSPs got in a brawl with an Acro, IYO, who would win?

GSP 1, acro 0 Theyre very toxic to acropora and most other corals. Gary, Ive tried peeling them off the rock with very little to no success, what "implement" have you used?

My favorite implement is my wife's fingernails. She doesn't have any problem getting them off at all.

Wowsers - George's fingernails must be tougher than I thought. :o :lol
We've got two different kinds of GSP in our tank...the longer polyped ones seem to be especially tough to get off the rock, and basically have to be cut or chisled off. I used to lean the rock they are on up against a base (bottom) rock in the rock structure, but not any more - they grow so fast, that they encrust on the nearby rock in a couple of weeks. NOW I keep it on the sandbed at LEAST 3-4 inches away from the nearest rock structure so I can catch it and frag before it grows onto the nearest rock. It's fairly easy to control as long as it stays on the sandbed.

JimD - LOL - I'm surprized...seasoned reefer like you! :roll Is the GSP in your main acro display tank, or do you have another tank going now?

W. :)

In the main tank, they were underneath a giant cap I recently removed, I really didnt realize the extent of their profusion until I ripped out the cap, theres no way these things are coming off this rock without dynomite, skrew it, Im kalkin the muthas! Hey, I may be seasoned alright, but, GSP in no way resembles SPS... lol

Something with a blunt tip like a butter knife or a screw driver might be good. Once you get the edge pealed up, just grab it with some hemostats and peal it off like a label.

I've used some curved end tweezers to peel them off. I've also used them to just scrape the crap out of them.....that method didnt work so well for a long term fix....cs
