Just put it on the bottom on sand. It will bruise easily if rubbing against rock. Bruises can become infected. They can also be target fed meaty stuff like brine shrimp.

Good luck, I haven't had much luck with open brains. Like GaryP said, be VERY careful in handling and placement - one little bruise can be their demise!

well that is a bummer.i placed it about midway up in the tank.i have no open places in the sand.i guess i will do some scaping and make some room for it on the bottom.my question would be would my 330 watts of vho in a 20" deep 100 gallon be enough light for the brain if it is on the sand?where i placed it tonight is on a fairly flat area with very little flow.so i do not think much rubbin will be goin on.i will deal with clearin a spot out for it tomorrow i guess.did not know about the bruising.guess i just got to do what i can.thanks and gary, how much luck do you think i will have with the kinda low wattage and the brain being 20" down from the light?thanks you guys.

Well I have 300 Watts of MH in a 18' deep tank and mine is doing great. Hmmm bruising... can I get a "fish whisperer" to come over and tell my clowns that are hosting in it to be careful :P
Though I have lost one in the past that was in the middle of the tank and bounced it way to the bottom >_< :cry .
Good luck with it when they settle in and puff out they are a center piece I think
