On Friday November 11th MIKE PALETTA will be MAAST's guest speaker!!!

This is a very exiting time for us because although there are some growing pains as we get bigger, there are also some advantages.

Great job to the BOD for making this possible!!!

Michael's books are a showcase of various designs and the ingenuity that can be accomplished in this hobby. He's also responsible for the setup of a 4,500-gallon reef exhibit at the National Aquarium in Baltimore and a number of reef systems at the Pittsburgh Zoo Aquarium.

More details about his presentation in November will come in the near future. ^_^

Mike is a great guy! Actually Tim Marvin met him and then introduced him to me. (Thanks Tim) The Paletta blue tort (sps) was :( one on my favorite corals in my tank. (when I had a tank) He will give a great seminar.
He worked at GARF.

I like the Paletta blue tort as well, a guy was selling it on RC but I could not afford it at the time. Maybe the Paletta blue tort can be raffled on that meeting. Its official, I nominate the paletta blue tort as a candidate for item to be raffled during that meeting. Can I get an amen?

I have secured permission to host the event here at the Coca-Cola company in San Antonio if the BOD is interested.
We have an auditorium and tables, and seating, and all the sodas you an drink!!!
The room would easily hold 150-200 people if interested....
We have audio / video and all that too if interested.
It is right across the street from the SBC center at #1 Coca-Cola Place if you want to mapquest.
It is right off I-35.
Its not stadium seating, but its free...........

Let me know.

Wow, that is great to hear Mike. You have made an offer that MAAST cant refuse. That would be a great place to host the meeting, seems like plenty of space and I am sure Mike Paletta would really appreciate that as well. We'll see what the BOD says. Let me be the first to thank you for your effort.

If one of our members has a video camera, could they tape it, for those members that could not attend the meeting?

If someone has a digital video camera I'll add the file to my site and post a link and then stream it so everyone can watch it on the web....or maybe MAAST will upload it for everyone.

How the heck I missed this thread is beyond me!

I've seen some of his presentation and learned an amazing amount. The dvd went bad after about 10 minutes, but I learned enough for 3 presentations in that short time!

Mike is a super nice guy and not snooty at all.

Qjuarez, it was really hard. I asked him. :) He and I had e-mailed back and forth a for a while. We've done some frag trading etc. I started to line him up when, um, uh, there were not sufficient funds available and we had a switching of our presidential position here at maast. Mike is only doing 3 presentations ALL YEAR and we got one!

If I can get my lazy butt moving, we should have another good one in January or Feb 2006.

Any updates Pete?!

Pete, I hate you for the color you're getting so fast on the Palatta Blue. (not a tort as far as I know) But he does have torts too.

When I have 100% of the information (95% there) I will post and add to calendar where it will not be missed ;)

Hmmm ... blue as blue can be ... maybe I will sell you a frag!!! :P

You're a funny one.

I'm starting to wonder if the PB is a coral that does better with a sand bottom. Mine was much more blue in my old system. It's growing really well, but not the color it should be.

Todd, what is the relative light intensity of your old tank vs. the new tank? Unless you have a nuclear reactor in your back yard it would be hard to squeeze as many photons into your new tank as you had on the old 92. I'm wondering if this may support Borneman's theory that color pigment production is primarily tied to light intensity, especially 420 nm.

Todd, thanks again man. I certainly will not miss this meeting. You guys have already got me wondering who its going to be for January. I am anxious, that is why I hate surprises.

It may be intensity, but Im not so sure on the hours anymore.

If one of our members has a video camera, could they tape it, for those members that could not attend the meeting?

I have a mini DV camcorder and could do this with permission from the speaker. I could also transfer it to my computer edit it a bit and put it on DVD.

Then Pilot bell could take it form there.

You're right Gary!

I'm actually using less light relative to size of tank on the new system. But, I'm also bare bottom AND using Ozone which I am now absolutely helps the light penetrate MUCH more.

Many people who have gone very low nutrient or BB have noticed corals like A. Nana loose a lot of their colors. Some have guessed that a few sps will look better with more bioload in the system.

I played arund with lower light in my old system. What it taught me most was that some corals that I THOUGH were best in high light were actually better in low light.

While some did color better/more intensely, many blue type started to get a lot of green in them which I didn't really want.

I have cut my high photo period from 11 hours a day to 8 hours now.

My feeling is a longer photo period than some of the "short light" people are running is better but with a HIGHER Kelvin temp on the bulbs.

Some of my coloration I blame on my xm10kk 400w bulbs. Not my favorite. Great for par and growth with regard to cost though.

I agree with that 100%! Sterile is not always a good thing.

I love my BB also and I am getting great colors. I have reduced my photo period as well. I was running about 9.5 hrs, now I'm down to 8 hrs. We will see what difference it makes.

We're working on getting a good supply of books that we will sell at the meeting and have Mike do a book signing session. Stay tuned... Same bat time, same bat channel.
