Well it would be latin if thats the scientific name. All the romantic languages came from latin and your guess seems pretty close. I would guess its something like porous mother. Just a guess though.

I couldnt find a latin translation of madre but, pora = eternally, without end. Maybe "mother without end" or "eternal mother". If this is the case then Montipora translates to eternal mountain

full name is madrepora oculata.
madre is short for mad--reefer and pora is latin for poor as in it takes alot of money to have a reef tank! So there fore one has to be alittle mad??? :wacko
