How do you frag leathers? (Obviously we couldn't make the meeting :( )

Ive got a 37g with 2 rather large leathers. Do I need to take them out to frag to avoid the large leathers from releasing too many toxins into my tank? and if so...how long should I keep them out of the tank? (I run carbon already) Or should I just frag them in tank, change my carbon and do a water change the next day.

I just want to 'prune'...

Where do I cut...are they picky like plants?
Can I glue the frags to rocks or let them attach themselves?

The 2 leathers Im planning on fragging are at the bottom left of the tank.

Almost not possible to do it wrong. I should say, I haven't had any difficulties.

I haven't taken mine out of the water, but a good question. Usually just cut with a razor blade right at a fork. I've then either stuck the frag down in the sand or in an empty shell or somewhere, they'll attach (and heal) in no time.

Then you've got the catch 22, cause the mother will probably grow even faster/better.

I recently saw an interesting piece on Garf's site about fragging them. I seem to remember them discussing removing from the tank. Also a pointer in using zip-ties to attach in lieu of say rubberbands that could squeeze too much.

I would cut in a separate bucket of water because of the slime produced. Just try to get a clean cut with scissors or a razor.

I use a tootpick through the leather and a rubberbacd holding the TOOTHPICK to the rock.

You can cut anywhere.....

Wow, nice tank. Have you considered entering it into TOTM?

If not, you should.

The reason for removing them from the tank is that leathers release toxins when they are stressed.

Some leathers i fragged didnt like the toothpick stuck through them and just split around the toothpick and fell off before they ever attatched to the rock. Tried rubberbands to hold them but if the tension isnt right sometimes they split and fall just like the toothpick. Best luck for me was to use some plastic netting stuff that I could wrap across the frag and glue to the rock. Enough tension to hold it on the rock but also has some give to it so that the frag can expand and retract without much restraint. Not sure what the stuff is called but I got it from walmart. Bag of marbles, and this stuff is the actual bag the marbles were in.
