View Full Version : Venting out of house?

I was wondering if anyone has ever vented their hood out of the house, or into the garage? The reason i am asking is, the wall that i am setting my tank along is an outside wall (garage). I was planning on having the hood closed off to any inside air and vent in from and out to the garage. If anyone has done this, has anyone had any ill effects of doing it? I am also going to have the MH ballasts, and my Gen-x return pump in the garage.

Thanks

The only problem I can see right off the bat is two-fold. Can the air that you are venting to the garage escape easily (and thereby allowing fresh air to enter your system - I personally would use indoor air to vent in)? The other issue is will you be running a car while it is in the garage. The noxious fumes would then be transferred to your tank! "Wouldn't be prudent."

Good points. I don't use the garage to park my car...hehee, even if i had a bike, i couldn't fit it. lol.... But i see where you are going. Maybe i can vent it to the attic somehow. Maybe the same concept as a vent in a restroom? I am just trying to keep the humidity out of the house. And not have to run a chiller.

You still bringing that barrel to the meeting tomorrow Polkster? I will be there.

Thanks

Yes I am and it has the float valve mounted and tested.

The main point missed here is your venting salty air. This extremely corrosive air will destroy anything metal! Vent it to the outside unless you want every tool, bike, fixture, and so on rusty in the garage. The attic can mold if not vented well. I am venting to the outside.

Thanks Tim. Do you use like a bathroom vent/ exhaust fan? And what about your return air? Is it from outside as well?

Thanks

the air vented out will have to be replaced with new air, therby sucking outside air into your air conditioned house. i have experimented with running an exhaust fan the first five minutes of every hour. it worked ok to remove the humidity from the room, but a small window unit works even better.

I agree with Ed. If a window unit is not an option use an exhaust fan from HomeDepot. You can buy a fan setup, and vent for less than $30. Like Ed stated it will pull air into your house from outside so you won't want it to run constanly. I am going to run mine for like 5 minutes every couple hours if I need it. It is also open to the room so I am hoping the AC will take care of it. I may just set it to come on when the cooling fans run.

They also make dehumidstat controllers you can hook up to a fan. Once the area reaches a certain humidity, it kicks the fan on. This is what i am using on my new setup.

They don't have them at home depot. I had to order it online.

Here is the one I got:

they also have another for 16.50

If you are going to pipe fresh air in, do it from outside. Garages are not hooked up to any ventilation systems so during the summer they get extremely hot and then very cool in the winter. You don't want to be sucking in air that is working against keeping your tank at a stable temp. Also, if you have anything in the garage that produces fumes (i.e. gasoline, paint/stains, fertilizers) you don't want to suck those fumes into the house either.

I run a large window unit. Tim get a big one, you remember my problems. It ran all the time, now it kicks on for a minute or two 3-4 times an hour. It is a 18K BTU unit in a room that is only 15 X 8 or so. I dont vent this form anywhere, the outside part of the window unit is in the garage. It works very well.

Good Luck

Wow, so many good ideas. Now i just need to decide which one to go with. I can probably vent into the attic and marry into the kitchens range vent( about 5' from the tank), but i am not sure about the salty conditions of the air. But then salt creep coming down into the kitchen. Wife wouldn't like that i don't think :(. Bur either way, i need to rethink this. Thanks for all the information ya'll.
