I just got my new sump. it holds close to 50 gallons of water. Marc at DFWMAS made it. It is 54" long. The first 15" to the right it is for the CS8-3 skimmer, the next 15" in the center is for the return and the last 24" is for the refuguim.

I have a 135 gallon tank with two overflow, using 1" bulkhead with a DURSO standpipe 1.5". My return back to the tank goes up 5' leaving the pump (external quite one 1100) it splits into two for the return.

I do have to change my return plumbing to go from the current setup to maybe a 3/4" or 1"

I need to find a pump that it will serve my needs. The only internal choice that I have is the Mag 18 or 24. I did want a Eheim, but the biggest pump they have is the Eheim 1262, 900 gpd. I do know that the mag pumps are noisy and they run hot sometimes.

I do need your suggestions. Please advise.

Thanks,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,

Welcome to MAAST!

I use an Oceanrunner 6500. It is a 1700 gph pump that is less expensive and more energy efficient (115 watts) than a Mag 18. You can see the specs on it at www.aqua-medic.com.

I'm using a Via Aqua pump on one of my tanks and love it. The prices on them are outstanding as well.

Thank you Joshua, GaryP and Ed for the advice. I am going to check on all the pumps you all suggested.

Question: How come we do not have a Group Buy Forum, like the DFWMAS(I am a member) has? I love thier group buy forum, but it is too far to get the stuff, it will not be worth the drive and gas.

Whom do I have to talk to here in our club to get that part added to our forum. I have few things in mind that I would like to do as a group buy, like sand, salt, RO/DI units and reeftopia cleaners group. Just wondering.

Thanks

For internal (submerged) pumps, I have been very pleased with the Eheim 1262 - maybe use that for your return, and add a couple of good power heads to make up the rest of the circulation? A waring on Eheims, the hose barb fittings are a metric size and difficult to get 3/4 ID tubing connected.

Also, the MAG 12 seems to be a good pump, I'm using a few as external pumps. The 12 (and I assume higehr end MAGs) is a much better design that the 5,7,etc. More massive and more quiet than the MAG7, etc.

I want to this opportunity to thanks; Chris and Wendy for coming by my place last night to take a look at my tank. Chris and Wendy were able to give some advise on how to re-do the tank, to place my new sump and what kind of pipes, upgrades I need to do to get a new pump to work right.

Chris suggested that I might have to go to and external pump, because of the heat in my tank with a low canopy (which I am re-doing as soon as I get some cash).

Anyway I am still clueless on what pump to buy internal or external.

Again thanks to Chris and Wendy for coming by and given me some advise. They are a great couple and I appreciated their wiliness to help a fellow club member and reef keeper friend. :D :)

Thanks,
Carlos

Carlos,

Again, you are very welcome and we enjoyed meeting you and the family last night.

I don't think that I mentioned it last night but I do own woodworking equipment and we could probably build you a new canopy without too much trouble. It would just be a matter of getting the wood and supplies.

That is a great Idea. You are a lifesaver. :-D I will check this weekend on how much the wood will cost. I cannot wait and with your help, I bet that it will come out great. I will bring the wood, materials and a 12 or 24 cold ones. Which kind do you like??? This could turn out to be a group project...... ;)

By the way Chris I have opened another post about how much water flow thru the overflow.

I will pm you with my work number.... :P

NaCl_H2O,

I have sent you a pm. I would love to have an Eheim 1264. But they are not made for the states yet. I called Eheim USA and they said that maybe in the early part of next year they will be in the USA. I can not wait that long.

I was thinking on getting a mag 18 or 24. What do you think? I know that still is going to get hot for an internal (submerged) pump.

My tank is running at 84 degrees :o . I know it is too hot according to Chris and Wendy. An internal (submerged) pump will make it hotter. I may have to external, but I do not what is a good external pump either. :( :?
