OK, having a brain fart. GaryP and I were just discussing this stuff and what ate it, and I forgot both!

Red slime stuff, looks like cyano but has lots of air bubbles. Snails die when they chow on it.

What is it and who eats it?

I think this is the stuff I have probs with from time to time Misti...I use Chemi Clean - will take care of it...but only temporary...it will come back. Caused from not enough circulation? Don't know name of it tho...

Bryopsis is bluish green and hairy. It sounds like cyano ... looks like cyano ... how does it taste? :D

It could be dinoflaggellates. If its red I'm thinking cyano though. Hermits eat cyano. If its dino's, just trying raising your ph to about 8.4 for about a week. From what I've read, that's supposed to kill it. Nothing eats dinos, its toxic and will kill snails. I'd also try getting some circulation to where its growing and run some phosphate remover.

This showed up when my RO/DI cartridges needed to be changed. Hermits will not touch it and the snails have quickly died... Dinoflaggellates was what I was loking for. Chemi-clean does not work. I will put in the phosphate sponge and raise the pH a little. Thanks!

Sounds like Dino's, good luck, that stuff can be a real mutha to deal with. I had a 6 month bout with it a couple a years ago. It can range in color from reddish to tan to brown, all resembling snot wth air bubbles in it. I dealt with it like this,,,,,Syphon regularly and often, increse water changes, raise the Alk to 13/14 Dkh, Ph to 8.6, slightly higher than Gary suggested for a week or two untill you start to see some recession. A healthy, etablished refugium is the key to long term success in controlling these types of bacteria. Some folks will suggest dripping kalk to precipitate P04.
