RIO's have a long standing history of being crap ;)
I've seen a few that had serious issues....

You could have a complete forum dedicated to items to stay away from... hmm maybe we should... but I argue that it doesnt belong in here.

Someone call Tim Marvin, I think we finally found something we really can all agree on!

(I hope that's taken the way it was meant, just my lame attempt at humor :-) ).

Now carry on bashing Rio pumps...

POwersweeps just stop moving not working. They actually start up quiet on a wavemaker. Rio's on the other hand, don't get me started. I had one die after a couple hours, and another one die after a couple days.... Now I do have one left in use on a tiny pond that has work straight for a couple years to my amazement.

I have had a RIO 2100 working flawless for almost 4 years. I hear a lot of crap talk about them, and i'm sure that many have had bad experiences with them but mine has never failed. I probably will go with a mag pump or an iwaki for my next pump since everyone seems so in love with them. Maybe the Rio pumps have taken a turn for the worse within the last few years, but the one I have is still going strong.

I have had poor experiences with the Rio pumps too. I regularly suggest the Mag Drive pumps over the Rios. Do any of you have any experience with the new Rio pumps, the Rio Hyperflow?

Rio's are "OK" esp. for an entry/budget pump. I had a 3100 that lasted for years, granted I could tell when it started (Chatter), it did the job. Then one day it just crapped out (shorted) and I replaced it with an EHEIM which I like much better. Bought several MAGs for my new setup, and a big Panworld/Blueline, but no experience with these in operation yet.

I'm in the process of replacing all my Rios. I had 6 going at one time. They do get stuck but are easy to clean with some vinegar. They have a tendency to scale up in a reef tank. They do OK in a FO tank. The trick is figuring out they are stuck before they burn themselves up. All i need is a couple of pumps to run my skimmers and I will be Rio free.

Tim, I think the the reason they do OK in your pond is that they are not running at a high calcium and Alk. concentration and thus do not scale up.
