refugium/sump

If I am putting a refugium and a sump together in the same tank and useing a piece of acrylic to divide them. Is it important to seal off the bottom, therefore nothing at the bottom of the reguguim will escape out into the the sump? Sealed off with silicone...

Think of it this way the refugium is for critters and macro and the sump is usually for equiptment, but I guess it would depend on your set up too.
