drain splashing into sump

Hi everyone. I have what I think is a really simple question for those with experience, I just for some reason couldn't really find an answer searching on here and RC, so I thought I'd just post the question.

I just set up my first sump. There is about a 6-8" drop from the end of my drain pipe into the water in my sump. So, no surprise, there is loud splashing. I'm going to extend this drain pipe so that it is much closer to the water level. My question is can the return pipe actually be completely underwater in my sump? Obviously this would eliminate the splashing noise completely, but I thought I had read somewhere in the past that you shouldn't do this.

I keep my drain hose under water to stop the noise! I also cut the end at an angle to cut down on the noise.

Yep. I added a piece of tubing to mine so the outlet is below the water level in the sump. Works great. I used to be able to hear my drain from the other end of the house. Now I can barely hear it sitting next to the tank.

Dozer - as mentioned it's not a problem running the drain line under water. It not only will cut down on the noise, but also on the splashing which will cause lots of salt creep. One little trick I also found awhile back was a way to reduce the bubbles that are produced from the drain line into the sump. Take a piece of PVC that is larger in diameter than the drain line and have it sit vertically in your sump with the top of it alittle below the surface level. Then put your drain line inside this pipe. That will force the bubbles to come straight up to the surface instead of staying in the water throughout the sump.
