I need flow for my 175, and i THOUGHT i had it all planned out, a MAg 18 on a SQWD. I heard today that it would cut the flow down too much, so now I am confused. This is a closed loop. Someone help me out!

It will cut back the flow to maybe around 1200. I have a mag 18 on a scwd on my 75 and it works fine. If you want max flow then I would go with a closed loop and a couple of sea swirls. They work great.

they splash too much for my liking, i saw the setup. I may run the 18 on a closed loop without SQWD

Why wont the mag18 run a scwd on a closed loop? Flow chart (http://www.3iqventures.com/literature.html) for the scwd. It would seem you could "T" and run 2.

figuring in head, i was going to run 1

My closed loop using a Mag 18 into a SCWD produces great flow? I am using two. My Mag 24 on a closed loop into two SeaSwirls ready produces some flow!!!

hey, where is your Mag? i was thinking of building a little shelf into my canopy for it, but the SCWD only handles 1400 GPH, so i though of putting it down in the stand. What do you think/

wait, so even if the pump is on the floor, and the water is being sucked out a PVC tube in the tank, theres no head? Maybe i dont understand what "head" is then.

Jim what is the switching duration on the mag18?

Both Mag 18s are sitting on the flool behing the stand. Switching occurs about every 5 to 6 seconds.
Jim
I hear the 1 inch SCWDs will be released soon. I will more than likely then remove the Mag 18 set ups and go with two Mag 36s.

I just bought a mag 18 and two sqwd's...
I'm planning on runnning it closed loop with two sqwds but can't figure out how to do the intake to the mag 18.

if I run the mag 18 intake in the tank, won't the snails get sucked right out of thier shells?
this is what I'm referancing....

Bigreefer no. Thats how I set mine up following that link.

thats the same way im going to set mine up

On mine I use an old J-tube from a Mag350 canister filter for the intake. The two snails I have climb all over it and do NOT get sucked in. I used the same intake on my Mag24 just bigger and the snails are OK there too.

Thanks... I've been stressing over this for a couple of days.

2 SCWD's with a mag18 on closed loop ... will give you a switching duration of @ 10-12 seconds. It is best to off set the SCWD's from the center and run 1 outlet longer than the other.

The 1" should be out in @ 60 days and will be threaded with a removable cap so the "motor" can be switched out. It will most likely come with both and give you 2 choices for switching duration.

i think im going to follow Jims advice and plumb it mag18--->scwd

I believe the reason he meant there is no head on a closed loop is because there is basically a complete siphon flow from both ends. If power fails you still have a completely filled system so the head pressure would be negligable.

I think there is no head pressure on a closed loop because you gain pressure going to the pump, then lose the same amount of pressure as it returns to the tank. The gain and loss cancel each other out so there is net gain or loss in pressure or than that from friction as was previously mentioned. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. Where is that **** mechanical engineer when we need him?
