i posted this question in another board and people thought I was sick and twisted. actually, the thread was called, "anyone keep a death log?" I have a list at the back of my fish journal of all the critters I have lost (or killed) in my six months in the hobby. Im not at home now so I dont know the exact count, but its probably I am at just above 60% (animals that I have kept alive/havent jumped out or gotten attacked by tankmates). i know that is bad, but most of those were in my first couple months of the hobby before I really had much experience and I certainly didnt have access to the online forums. the good news is, I have three of my original fish still, (one of which is a dragonet!) along with hermit crabs and snails. anyways. try not to think of me as too much of a fish killer ;)

I started in this hobby in 82, so I'd have to say...too many to count. I heard somewhere that it is estimated that of all the sw fish sold more than 90% are not alive after 1 year. It's a bummer but I always try to keep in mind that right now there is probably a fisherman using a show size Imperator angel as cut bait. At least hobbyists are trying.

LOL, I would have tend to agree that keeping a "Death Log" does sound a little sich/twisted. Richards estimated percentage is depressing! I think a lot of that comes from poor collection methods and stress from shipping. Another large part of that is from many LFS selling everything to anyone just to make a buck instead of educating customers that have no clue as to what they are doing. Education is key to our hobby's future and the future of our oceans inhabitants. While saltwater hobbyists are doing better than the fishing industry, the hobby is still responsible for the over collection of certain livestock which could lead to extinction of some species in the long run.
Anyways, now that I'm off my soapbox as Henry likes to say, I have lost a few fish myself and think that one lost fish is too many. I was and still am in love with flame angels. I have gotten two during my time in this hobby and had them both die not long after I got them. After hearing about their poor survival rates due to thier collection methods, I gave up my quest to have one as I didn't want to be responsible for another dead fish. I am happy to say I have had my blue regal tang and my two true percula clowns for over a year now! And I got them way before that silly movie came out, thank you! lol :-)

I've lost two. One ****sel and a blue tang. Didn't cry over the ****sel, but the blue tang had me depressed for a few days.
I have thought about an interactive website called the "Internet Fish Graveyard"
I'll see if I can get it up and running .....

for which enviroment? haha. for salt its only been one, due to the thrash of a brittle star. freshwater on the other hand, i have never killed any either, but have had $100+ been eaten by just 2 central am. cichlids. man, for that money i could have gone to the logical reef and snatched some killer zoos, dang. i guess thats why all of my money goes to the nano, now.
