View Full Version : Cloudy/ bulging eyes

This morning I noticed my humu-humu triggers eyes seem to be bulging and one of them is cloudy. He is in a FOWLR system that is soon to be upgraded - I contribute part of this problem to outgrowing the tank.
The nitrates are as usual, high. I have had him for a little over a year and I can't seem to keep them down. All other tests are fine (ammonia, nitrite, ph).
Can I use epsom salt to treat this? If so, I have some that contains:
Magnesium (Mg).....9.8%
9.8% Water soluble magnesium
Total Sulfur (S).....12.9%
12.9% Combined sulfur
Derived from Magnesium sulfate.

PLEASE HELP AND LET ME KNOW IF I CAN ADD THIS TYPE, OR WHAT I SHOULD DO.

Thanks,
Jenn

Sounds like popeye with a possible secondary infection. You can use epsom salts to relive the pressure but the best cure I have found is a good size water change - my regal tang has had it twice in the past two years and both times it went away with a good size water change - meaning it is likely a result of deteriorating water quality.

If you want to keep the nitrates down I suggest adding a refugium or cutting back on feedings as partial solutions.

Thanks Mike. I will do a good size water change and add a little of this salt. Is it ok to use the type described? It is what my Husband uses for his palm trees - its called Epsogrow 100% natural epsom salt magnesium sulfate. I have a clown trigger and lion in the tank w/ him.
I have a refugium/sump setup, but am waiting to find a larger tank before I use it.

Thanks again for the help. I am glad to hear the regal pulled through this.

I just use the cheap HEB brand which just says magnesium sulfate so I'm not sure about what you have.
I have always done a large water change prior to adding the epsom salt. You probably won't have much success without improving your water parameters, as Mike said.

Thanks Richard. I am patiently waiting for a new tank to come available so I can get this situation fixed - until then, I 'm going to go to HEB and get some as well as grab some of those clames you and I spoke about. I will let you know what happens.
