What kind of snails are you talking about? I have turbos that seem to live a long time.

I have no idea. Not sure what those are. Get some Turbo snails and they will last you a long time.

Snails are pretty sensitive to some things. Didn't I read somewhere that high nitrates will kill them?

Also incorrect or insufficient acclimation can lead to a short life. Is that color, the color of the snail or the snail and the shell. If the snail body is black and with an orange rim it could be the ones called mexican turbos or orange foot turbos. At least thats what I've seen those called

This may not be any help but I had problems keeping snails and hermits alive for awhile then found that my salinity was about 1.021 as my tester was cheap and not accurate. I now keep salinity over 1.026 and have no problems keeping them alive.

They should last a good while. I got my first snails, cerith and astrea in June 2003, and most are still going strong.
