Yehaw! Came walking in today and looked at the tank and there were my clowns finally hosting my Rose BTA. It is so awesome...they are beautiful with the black & white against the rose color....wow....just thought I'd share my excitement. They are loving it....wallowing all over and under it... :-D
The ultimate....even tho the anemone moved onto the glass.

Am, glad to see you got your own user name. After talking to you at your house the day we picked up the snails I've been constantly trying to guess if its you or Alex posting on here.
Sherri, your rose and clowns look great. Congrats.

Thanks Rudy....This was a rush to me...it's like I can't take my eyes off the tank now. Their color of black/white makes it that much more awesome in the Rose BTA.
Alex...I thought for sure that my rose was about to split...but it didn't...it got huge. It has moved around quite a bit lately. Good timing on getting those bulbs in...think I need the change. Getting kinda tired of the VHO's :-o , maybe here in the near future start looking into MH...Would prob sell the 440 VHO I have. Really nice Hamilton setup...but personally...want MH for what I want to do with the tank.

Sherri,
The size of an anemone will grow and shrink as they do water changes, especially after they have been fed. They only have one opening and it has to do double duty as it expels waste. A lot of corals are that way. My LTA and LT plate are the same way.

Hi Gary! The reason I thought that maybe it was getting ready to split is that Rudy (oceancube) had stated that his had done the same thing and HAD split. Was just keeping an eye out for the possibility. The rose has detached twice now in the last week and now on the left side glass where the clowns started hosting. In fact....his "foot" isn't even what is attached to the glass...it is the side of him - the "foot" is just suspended in the water. (???) It's been since June that I have had my bulbs replaced and should be getting ne ones Monday. Replacing 2 now & the other 2 prob within the month. Do you think he is active due to the light??? Temp stays 80-82* Or could it be I'm VHO and would be better off with MH?? hehe Trying to convince hubby.... :skeezy: (hmmmm...I sure do use this "smiley" a lot in my posts!!)
BTW...just noticed in the pic I posted - you can tell the foot isn't attached - it is his side that is holding against the glass.

Sherri,
It will find a place to settle eventually. This is not unusual. I'm sure if its happy it will eventually split. MY LTA's split about every 6 months. When they do they split 3 for 1. I have seen some really huge rose BTA's but if you keep feeding it it will grow to the point where it is going to split. I'm sure the change in lights will make him look for a place where he is happy.
My LTA has found a hole in my LR and just sticks his tentacles out when he is hungry and pulls back inside at night and when its doing a water change or "digesting." What are you feeding your anemone? They aren't picky but I usually target feed them mysids or silver sides. I think they probably feed on a lot of the smaller zooplankton in the water as well. My clowns also drag food back to the anemone when I feed.

I feed it silversides - don't have any mysids...could get some tho for variety. He happily eats a silverside about every 3 days. I'm aware that he shrinks...he does that from time to time...there for a while it was before lights out. I see no prob at present...was just curious as to why he is detaching...been seeing some others posting as to theirs doing the same thing recently...Today I feed him his silverside - we'll see how the clowns react to it. Love this hobby! Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks Minh...I love them....they remind me of puppies playing....they really interact with each other. Got them when they were small but the female was already a bit larger than the male. Really enjoy watching them especially now. My regal tang is a bit put out....he was their running buddy and now he circles the anemone - HOPEFULLY he knows he can't go there...he tried joining the clowns in my old torch coral I had and had his face bleached out for a day! Got him same time I got the clowns and they have been inseparable...
Thanks Jenn...it has been a good show with the anemone on the glass...the clowns are "wallowing" underneath the BTA where I can see also. Fun fun

I feed my roses daily, they are under 3 VHO's and haven't moved since I put them in. They have doubled in size since I bought them, hopefully they will split soon..

Tim - then is every 3 days maybe not enough? Think maybe he'd be happier and more amp to settle and stay put if maybe I feed him more often than that? And this guy is big...
and the new buls should be here tomorrow....

I'm still trying to learn the propagation on these myself, but they eat it with no problems. I feed silversides, shrimp, krill, scallops, spinach, romaine and white fish. I run it all together in the food processor and freeze it in cubes. Everyone eats this goo.

Hmmm...up to now I've only fed silversides...but will start with some variety myself...and start feeding every other day...

Variety is always best. I would feed the anemone various seafood. I find that BTA eats just about everything.

That's nice to know Tim & Minh that they eat just about anything...this is my 1st anemone...glad I started with a rose. Thanks Larry...they are at a odd angle at the left front corner of the tank - but get to watch them at different angles...really cool.

hey sherri ill tell you my little secret on making it split, i prayed everynight for about 3 weeks in a row and it worked, try it, oh you have to be on your knees with the lights on!!! :-o , patients is the key, just make sure your feeding every 2 days, and your water perimeters are in top notch condition, also my ph was at 8.4, and nitrite was at 5ppm, dont know if that helped it but it happened!!! good luck on it, or maybe it'll just get very very big, that'll also be very cool i think!!!! see ya at the meeting girlfriend :-D

A couple 10% water changes for a couple days in a row should trigger a split if they are ripe for it. Large and swelled up. Increase the feeding a little, and photoperiods usually play a part in it too. Longer that 12 usually triggers reproduction. So, if you have increased the feeding (Dr Mac recommends soaking the food in Selcon), added a little to the photoperiod and then do the water changes, its likely you will get to be a BTA anemone grand momma or poppa.

Sherri;
I've read that the natural food for E. quadricolor (BTA) is shrimp; mine eats krill. You might try feeding that. As far as it moving around, please be careful of any powerheads and/or drains. Typically they go for lower light, at least the green ones do. In fact, mine has always sought out a low light/low flow area of my tank, and unfortunately bleached a month or so ago when I treated for flatworms. I don't think it was the flatworm exit, but the added light as I used ALOT of carbon after the treatment and the water was really clear; i think the extra light light may have caused it to bleach. Now it's finally eating again, but not much, and I'm worried it might not make it. I've had this anemone for 2 years.
Now, I have a question for anyone who might know. Will my oscellaris clowns host in my S. haddoni anemone? It's not a natural pairing, but I wonder if anyone has any experience in this. S. haddoni is the most common of the carpet anemones. I bought a nice one (actually traded) at aquatic warehouse about a week ago. So far, it's doing great; found a suitable location and is eating krill and formula VHP. I need to get some silversides, as supposedly fish is it's natural diet.

Matt,
I saw those electric green carpets at AH. They were outstanding. I would have taken one home if I had a place to keep it. Good luck with it
I've seen a chart somewhere that gives the appropriate clowns for different species of anemones. Probably on one of the vendor sites. I don't recall where it was but someone here probably has it bookmarked.

Yeah..I have some krill....will feed him that today. My lights are in - so hopefully that will help him settle. :-o Doing a water change either today or tomorrow also. He shriveled down last night & is big & full today...he is fine and the clowns happy...
Thanks for the website info Gary - will read up on more info on BTA's.
