Hard to say without a picture, but I'd guess tunicates. As far as patches we need more info. Color, size, does it stand off the rock?, if it looks like a sponge it probably is.

I brought it up again and now the pictures are there. Those are tunicates and do the others close up if you spray water across them? They appear to be tiny tube worm colonies.

i noticed that when the lights were off they were all flat looking...and as the lights came on and everything opened up so did they. they almost look like some type of leather or colt.

I have had a lot of these little colonies of tiny reddish brown looking feather duster type worms. You almost need a microscope to get a good view of them.

Those appear to by hydroids...if they have a semi hard tube, with little feather duster type deals that retract when you spray water on them, then I am pretty sure they are hydroids. If you have them, I suggest you get rid of them, as they spread quickly, and sting other corals so hard, that it puts aiptasia to shame.

I bet they have soft tubes. Right?

They look like tiny little aptasia in a tube right?

I think these may be feather dusters. They have a fairly hard tube and are pretty spread out. but I'll check some pics to help id.
