Ive seen this behavior before, in most cases it was one, or the combination of a few things, tube worms forming on the shell near the mantle, small aiptasia, or pyramid snails, any one of those can cause irritation and result in what youre describing. As far as the zenia goes, it could be a source of irritation I suppose, but not likely, Id move it to be sure.

Xenia can cause a clam to retrac it's mantle. I would move it up wind or up flow of the xenia. But there are many other creatures that can also cause this to happen. Crabs, shrimp, worms, fish I have also found PH is a huge factor in the stress level of clams. What can of creatures are in the tank with the clam?

This is a post from reef central. Seems a few poeple are loosing clams to a "curling mantle condition"

What ever causes this mantle curling condition is driving me crazy. I had a big squamosa which exibited the condition off and on for months. I would fresh water dip and the condition could go away for a while. Two days ago I dipped three of my clams for the same reason and this morning those three and one more are dead. I have three remaining squamosa, one gigas, one crocea, one maxima and one hippopus which are unaffected. I hope they remain that way. I guess the fresh water dip is only a temporary solution. This makes me so mad.

How is your clam doing?? I'm curious because on of my maximas started doing the same.

Well i tried dipping the clam in Tech-D and it helped alittle and but after a day or so it went back to looking the same and then got worse.
today im going to try a fresh water dip and see if that helps but he is looking really bad and i want to get him out of the tank before he completly dies off thanks for all the help and if this dosent work we will be holding a funeral for him in two or three days.
im my opinion and is only my opinion that he has something inside him as he hasnt lost any color in his mantle and the mantle is starting to melt away on the sides and wont extend at all..
thanks for all your help
