I'm building a new canopy for my tank and I was wondering if there was a certain kind of wood that i should use,and suggestions.

I've buit a few canopies for my tanks, I've used poplar or however you spell it from home depot. I've used 1/2" MDF, but I would definitely seal it with something because moisture will tear that wood up.

I would go with some nice oak or something similiar. Put a nice stain and seal it to keep moisture out.

It depends on how you want to finish it. If paint is fine, go with some plywood. If you're going to stain it, then your preferred hardwood species will look the best.

I've got pictures up of my just-completed-and-installed 55 gal. canopy in the gallery on marshreef.com

I used 1 x 14 in pine for my hood but left the top open, then I finished it with some black oil based acrylic paint. It's holding up really good.

I stick to Oak plywood, and solid Oak.
