I have recently started a reef and all is going well. I could easily go buy a book, but then why have this forum ... . At this time my only current is from my emperor and protein skimmer in a 58 gallon tank. Should I have more? If so could some one recommend a pump set up that would work well?
Thanks Pete

Depends on what you are going to keep. Acropora need a lot of circ., but musrooms can get by with just a little. Let us know a little more about what you are going to get.

I plan on getting a little of a lot if that makes sense? I am already considering switching a 100 gallon tank over as well ... I guess Ive got the bug. I have purchased a few things already and just add as I see something that catches my eye. In the gallery "Petes Reef" would be me. There is xenia, mushrooms and zooanthid there now but I hit the local shops a few times a week to see if there is something eye catching and of course affordable. At the same time wouldnt the flow be helpful in maintaining the tank?

Can I get away with the sump? or would I still need to get a pump? Im looking to do it right the first time ... not looking to get by just looking long term.
Thanks Pete

Thanks for the headup, but I've already got rid of all my extra pump. I might have some sump & lighting extra.

Ok I stopped at Alamo and picked up a pump (not ready for the sump/overflow) Its a 58 gallon and the pump is powerful it does like 750 gallons an hour(Rio 1700). I think this is too much but Ill use it else where. Any suggestions for the gph on a 58? As for the sump over flow I have decided to (when I get it back ... Leak) convert to a Reef also so I would appreciate a little help there on the set up if you are interested, justletmein .. we are in the same area.
Thanks Pete

same area park trail ... but if you would consider lending a hand when I get ready to set up the 100 ... id be grateful. I can see the checks flying now 100 gallon 50 lbs of rock at 5 buck and live sand. Its all worth it though.

Rio is a poor choice in pumps. Take it back if you haven't used it much yet. It is a decent size, but in my opinion not large enough for acropora. Go with the other suggestions here and get a mag 7 or 9, they will pump water much better than the Rio and they won't short out and cause a mushroom cloud over your tank. If you must kill your tank with the rio, get a grounding probe to buy you enough time, when it does start shorting out, to get a new pump. I really like dolphins, but I don't think it would work in the application you want it for.

That would be ? and purchased where? If I do the sump over flow on the 100 will I need the one purchased today for it?

I had about 12 running at one time and they have all shorted out except for the ones I use in fresh water only, and they have problems when I start mixing salt.

If you're looking for ciruclation pump inside the main tank, several Maxijet would take up less room then the Rio pump.
