Going to corpus christi this weekend, planning on picking up some sand and even live rock if I can find it. Would this be good, or would it contain a lot of stuff I don't want. Also any good locations to get stuff?

I've heard that anything from our beaches or near 'em have very hi levels of petroleum ond other pollutants on them...has anyone else heard of that? Could be harmful to your tank.

Well, this message is probably too late, maybe you will get this. I'm not sure what the legal aspects are on collecting from Texas shores, but I know in some states it is illegal. You might be alright if you get some sand from somewhere on South Padre that doesn't have much traffic. There is a lot of trash and pollutants that get in the water and I know that it is not advisable to use water from the coastal areas because of this. I don't think there is much in the way of large reefs off the Texas coast so finding decent live rock will not be easy. Most of the stuff that is pulled from the Gulf of Mexico is found further south I think.

As far as LFS goes, I think there are one or two there, but haven't had a chance to visit them. Let us know if you have any luck.

Well just got back. The only thing I collected was dry sand that was not to far from the beach. I also collected some crushed shells/mixture stuff to add to help with calcium. I read a few posts about how you can get stuff inside live sand that you don't want, not to mention polluntants and other debris. I will throw it all into a pillow case, and wash it very good before I put it into the aquarium.
