:x i have done everything i know to do and i cannot get my calcium above 280... i have recently added a calcium reactor and i'm still adjusting it but that has only stabalized at 280.. for three days i have added 4 tsp a night of turbo calcium and nothing.. it is not precipitating out. because there are no signs of it doing that. my alk is a 3 meq/l which is about where i want it.. without raising my Ca levels ..MY CORALS WONT' GROW...... i am frustrated .. anyone have any ideas.. oh and i just did a water change and have been adding magnesium.

What type of test kit are you using Mike? For Calcium it's always good to have two different kinds just to compare as you'll get different results sometimes. Especially if the kit is a bit dated... sometimes even new. :-/

The calcium reactor won't raise your calcium levels but it sounds like it's doing its job of keeping it steady. I think you should try adding a few teaspoons at a time.. wait a few hours, test again.. and keep going at it with a few more teaspoons.

Here's a link to a nifty little online calculator to find out how much you should need. linkified (http://www.andy-hipkiss.co.uk/index.htm?http://www.andy-hipkiss.co.uk/cacalc.htm).

I think I remember that the calculated end result is the amount to dose through a 1 week period.

So 42 tsp / 7 days = 6 tsp / day... average.

So maybe up your dosage a bit and see how much it raises... If it's not going up much... try 7 or 8 tsp's.

I've had that problem once before on a new set up. I was dumping tons of Turbo calcium in and ended up doseing a large container in about 5 days. It finally came up.

careful most test kits dont work-REALLY DONT WORK! My first test kit was an API and the calcium never read right. you get what you pay for. There are only a couple that are trustworthy, one being salifert. Calcium is something you dont want to be messing around with, it can tip your ph for one.

magnesium is a big factor in preventing calcium from going higher. It takes a lot of ml to raise magnesium, but make sure to only up the magnesium 100ppm each day

Double check your calcium and magnesium test kits against someone elses

BTW, API is fine for calcium and ALK, its what ive always used. For checking magnesium I use Elos

In natural saltwater, Magnesium is in the range of 1200 - 1300 ppm. It is important to maintain a level similar to this range because magnesium helps maintain higher levels of alkalinity and calcium. Frequent use of kalkwasser reportedly lowers magnesium levels.
