I've heard that you can put these things called "mod chips" into your xbox that bypass the security that MSFT put into the XBOX thus allowing you to put bigger hard drives and playing games directly off the hard drive, loading emulators to play nintendo games on the XBOX, playing windows media files on the XBOX, run linux on your xbox, etc, etc.

We MOD x-boxes all the time h34r . And you can do all the above. You can also run an app that allows you to copy your games directly to your network or x-box hard drive and play it from your machine instead of a disk. You can also rent games and copy to your hard drive (of course that is illegal 8). Lots of good stuff you can do when you mod.

No, the problem is probably a bad DVD drive and possibly a bad Hard drive. I am in McAllen, but if you want to PM me we can discuss a trade in.

Not familiar with the XBox or how it comes apart. I've had to take apart my sons P2 several times and just lightly brush across the lasers lens with a lent free cloth (the type for cleaning CDs, camera lenses, etc.). So far this has helped get the lens cleaner than those silly cleaning disks you can buy and got it to working again.

    Just a thought.

Pull the four rubber feet off the bottom and remove the screws under them as well as the two screws under the x-box sn tags. Pull the cover off carefully. They're torque screws.

After the cover is removed, its simple to remove the rest of the parts. You can get parts cheap somtimes on ebay. Anybody with average mechanical skills can easily repair their own x-box. z28pwr is correct there should be an error code that can be looked up and tell you what might be wrong. When it comes to the MOD chip its a little bit of a different story.
